Julia Moore scores LBSU goal on a penalty kick in the 66th minute
LONG BEACH, Calif.— No. 11 Santa Clara defeated Long Beach State 1-0 Thursday night in women's soccer action at George Allen Field.
Long Beach State goalie Aurora Schuck was outstanding in the first half. She saved the first six Santa Clara shots on goal in the first 40 minutes. However, the Broncos broke the seal with 4:03 remaining in the opening frame. Lucy Mitchell sent a through ball to Kennedy Schoennauer. Her blast from 15 yards out went in the top left of the LBSU goal.
Schoennauer scored again in the 56th. She forced a turnover off the LBSU defense and scored just inside the 18. Caroline Gray fouled Kassandra Ceja inside the goalkeeper's box in the 66th minute. The Beach were awarded a penalty kick that Julia Moore converted to cut the Broncos' lead to 2-1.
In the 81st minute, Grace Caldwell's long pass to Liz Worden for a LBSU breakaway. Worden's touch was a bit heavy, allowing Santa Clara (3-0) goalie Ally Reynolds to grab the ball for possession. Worden found herself in a similar position two minutes later, sending a pass to Moore. The Broncos' defense knocked the ball away. Schuck made eight saves, raising her season total to 18 for Long Beach State.
