Smith and Demelo score for LBSU
SAN DIEGO—Long Beach State defeated the University of San Diego 2-0 Sunday afternoon in women's soccer at Torero Stadium.
The Beach threatened in the 10th minute as Jordan Candelaria dribbled in front of USD goalie Ilise Medrano and passed Kassandra Ceja. Ceja had an open net, but her attempt at LBSU was high.
On the ensuing Toreros' possession, the Beach turned the ball over just outside the 18, where Sara Evans' shot went wide right. Medrano saved Ceja's second match attempt in the 14th in the bottom center of the net. After Medrano took possession of San Diego's goal kick, Liz Worden was turned away.
Penny Smith put the Beach on the board in the 21st minute. Long Beach State was awarded a corner kick. Makayla Demelo sent the ball to Ceja, who passed towards the left post to Candelaria. She passed to Smith, who tapped in from six yards.
The score remained 1-0 as the Beach outshot the Toreros 10-2 during the opening 45 minutes.
Long Beach State doubled the lead shortly after the second half got underway. Makayla Demelo made a steal on the right flank. She passed to Summer Laskey who sent a cross back to Demelo who took a right-footed shot that went into the upper right of the USD net.
The Beach outshot the Toreros 16-7 for the match, 7-1 on goal. LBSU goalie Aurora Schuck made one save as she recorded her first shutout in a Long Beach State uniform. Medrano charted five saves for USD.
