Avila Becomes The 55th Former Dirtbag To Play At The Major League Level

LONG BEACH, Calif.— Nick Avila became the 55th former Long Beach State baseball player in the Major Leagues when Avila debuted for the San Francisco Giants on Apr. 1.

Avila, who was added to the roster earlier in the day, pitched two innings for the Giants, striking out Shohei Ohtani for his first big league strikeout.

Avila pitched for the Dirtbags in 2019 after beginning his collegiate career at San Joaquin Delta College. He was second on the team in ERA (3.99) and third in innings (56.1). He went 0-5 in 12 appearances (eight starts), striking out 38 and walking 19.

Avila was drafted by the Giants in the 26th round in 2019. He was a member of the Giants' organization through 2022 and was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft. After not making the White Sox in the Spring, Avila returned to the Giants' organization and led the Pacific Coast League in wins with 14 and appearances (56) for Sacramento.
