Askew’s Big Night Leads Long Beach State Past Hawai’i

12/7/2024 4:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Beach finishes up Bold Week with two wins to open Big West action.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Devin Askew filled up the stat sheet for Long Beach State, finishing with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 steals as the Beach defeated Hawai'i 76-68, giving fans a great way to celebrate 30 years inside of the Walter Pyramid, home of the Big West's best home court advantage.

With the win, Long Beach State (3-8, 2-0 Big West) closed out the inaugural Bold Week unbeaten, a new wrinkle in the league schedule that saw two early conference games in the first week of December.

Askew came in as the team's leading scorer, having finished in double-figures in every game this season, but was in complete command throughout the contest on Saturday as Long Beach State defeated Hawai'i (5-3, 0-1 Big West).

Askew set career highs in both scoring and steals in the win, finishing 4-for-5 from three and 6-of-7 from the line in leading the win. Austin Johnson also had a big night for the Beach, recording his first double-double with LBSU putting up 14 points with 10 rebounds, creating an inside-out duo for the Beach that the Rainbow Warriors had no answer for on Saturday.

In the opening half, Hawai'i made their best push at the game with an 11-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the half, but the Beach chipped into the lead with baskets from Kam Martin and Cam Denson. Martin tied the game with a three at 27-27, and the Beach went inside to Johnson to regain the lead and would lead by 37-32 at the half as Askew canned a three just before the end of the half.

A layup from Askew pushed the lead to double-figures with just under 12 minutes remaining, and another three from the senior pushed the lead up to 15, helping Long Beach State close out the win.

Long Beach State was nearly perfect from the line, 16-of-17 and had a hot night showing from outside, 10-of-13 from three as the Beach shot 50% or better from the field for the second game in a row.

Long Beach State will return to non-conference action for the rest of December, starting with a trip to San Diego to face the Toreros on Tuesday, December 10. That game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. with live coverage on ESPN+.
