Long Beach State Drops First Game Of Ball Dawgs Classic

11/25/2024 10:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Beach got out to an early lead, but fall 71-48 to UNC Greensboro.

HENDERSON, Nev. – Long Beach State's strong start was answered by a late run to close the first half from UNC Greensboro, and the Spartans controlled the action the rest of the way in a 71-48 setback for the Beach from Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nev.

In the first of three games for the Beach at the Ball Dawgs Classic, Long Beach State (1-6) got off to a quick start. Devin Askew converted a three-point play to put the Beach up 10-6, and a pair of free throws from the senior would put the Beach in front 20-13 after the first ten minutes of play.

UNC Greensboro (3-2) roared back behind stout defense. With Long Beach State leading 22-16, the Spartans scored seven straight to take their first lead. The Beach found Austin Johnson inside for a dunk to cut the lead to two at 26-24 with 3:35 left in the first half. UNCG held the Beach off the board for the rest of the half, extending their lead to 35-24 at the end of the first.

A Ramel Lloyd 3-pointer cut the lead back to 10 points at 38-28, but a 7-0 run for the Spartans increased the lead and Long Beach State never got back to within 15 points for the remainder of the contest.

Coming in as one of the best perimeter defensive teams in the country, UNCG held Long Beach State to just 3-of-15 shooting from three, while making 12 threes themselves which accounted for much of the difference. The Beach outrebounded the Spartans, but also had 16 turnovers which helped UNG take nine more shots on the evening.

Askew led the Beach in scoring with 16 points, while Lloyd Jr. finished with 13, the two players for the Beach in double-figures on the night. Derrick Michael Xzavierro was the team's leading rebounded with six, while Christian Richardson added six points of the bench for LBSU.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Tuesday night, facing UTEP in the evening game with a 5:30 tipoff time, streamed live via FloCollege.
