The Miners scored 26 points off of turnovers as Long Beach State was defeated 70-44.

HENDERSON, Nev. – Long Beach State led early and were down by two late in the first half, but a 14-2 run by UTEP gave the Miners a 37-23 edge at halftime and the Beach never recovered, falling 70-44 in the second of three games at the Ball Dawgs Classic.

                Devin Askew gave Long Beach State (1-7) a lift early, hitting two quick threes to give the Beach an 8-2 lead. UTEP (4-2) regained the lead, but Long Beach State pulled back even on a Wainwright jumper at 19-19.

                Down four at 23-19, an Askew drive cut the lead back to two, but a 14-2 run from UTEP to close the half gave the Miners a 37-23 halftime edge. Ramel Lloyd Jr. was knocked out of the game in that run, keeping a key scorer for the Beach out of the game in the second half, and that, along with 27 turnovers that led to 26 UTEP points helped the Miners continue to pull away in the second half.

                Askew led Long Beach State with 21 points, while Wainwright added 14, but the Beach had a hard time finding other offensive production, limited to nine other points with seven coming off the bench, led by four from Varick Lewis.

                Long Beach State will close the Ball Dawgs Classic against San Jose State Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage on FloCollege.
