SPOKANE, Wash. – Derrick Michael Xzavierro was a point shy of a double-double while Devin Askew led the Beach in scoring but No. 3 Gonzaga proved too talented and too deep at home, defeating Long Beach State 84-41 Wednesday night.
Xzavierro finished with 9 points and 11 rebound and Austin Johnson had 6 points and 7 rebounds despite limited minutes due to foul trouble as the bigs had a respectable night against the Zags, as the Beach led on the glass at halftime despite the scoring margin.
Johnson got the Beach started inside after an opening possession three from Gonzaga (5-0), and the defense in the early minutes held strong, but a cold spell offensively kept Long Beach State (1-4) from taking advantage against the No. 3 team in the country.
Up 9-4 after the first five minutes, Gonzaga took over with a 14-0 run to open up a cushion, and led by as many as 24 in the first half. The Beach closed the half strong, getting a spark from a three from Askew and a putback dunk from Johnson to cut the edge down to 15 and trailing 40-24 at the half.
Down 54-33 with 13 minutes remaining, another big Gonzaga run sealed the win for the Zags as the Beach couldn't keep up in the final ten minutes.
Askew led the Beach in scoring with 12 points, and Xzavierro had a pair of blocks to go with his big night on the glass, as the sophomore was the game's leading rebounder.
Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, hosting Fresno State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 23. Live coverage of the game will be provided on ESPN+.
