Demelo's Goal In The 81st Ties Long Beach State At Cal Poly 2-2

Kassandra Ceja recorded her fifth goal of the year for LBSU
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Makayla Demelo's goal in the 81st minute earned Long Beach State a 2-2 tie at Cal Poly in Big West women's soccer play Sunday morning at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The match began at 9 a.m., moving up three hours due to forecasted heat in San Luis Obispo. The Beach threatened in the seventh, as Liz Worden's first game attempt was blocked by the Cal Poly defense, resulting in a corner kick. LBSU played the ball short, with Julia Moore gaining possession. Her shot from 20 yards was wide right.
The Mustangs record their first attempt of the match in the 22nd minute. Cal Poly earned a corner kick and went short. Whitney Wiley took the pass, shooting wide left. On the ensuing Long Beach State possession, Summer Laskey's attempt was saved out of bounds by Mackenzie Samuel, who came out to challenge Laskey, resulting in an LBSU corner kick.
The Beach set piece was hit over the end line by the Mustangs for a second corner. Worden's ball found Kassandra Ceja on the goal line, where she headed it in for her fifth goal of the season. The Mustangs tied the match three minutes later. Cal Poly forced a Long Beach State turnover. Wiley took possession. She dribbled to the 20-yard line on the field, where her long-range blast found the top right of the LBSU goal.
Cal Poly took the lead in the 29th minute when the Beach was whistled for a handball in the box. Jessie Holliday converted the penalty kick for a 2-1 Mustangs' advantage. The next Cal Poly offensive attack came in the 44th minute. Coming off a corner, Holliday's attempt set off a scramble before the goal, which saw Long Beach State be credited with a team save.
Two minutes into the second half, Laskey was sent on a run after Demelo forced a turnover. Laskey dribbled into the six-yard box, where her shot went high and to the right of the Cal Poly goal. In the 51st minute, a Long Beach State offensive chance was capped off by Ceja, who went high and left from inside the six-yard box.
Playing on the same field that the Cal Poly football team uses, McKenna Carbon's attempt in the 55th minute went through the goalposts, high above the Long Beach State goal. However, the ball was touched by an LBSU defender, resulting in a corner. Emily Nedom registered an attempt off the set play, but her shot was wide. Aurora Schuck saved a Wiley blast in the 79th minute to keep it 2-1.
The Beach were awarded a free kick in the 81st, which Marissa Garcia took. She sent the ball toward the goal, where a deflection found Moore, who passed the ball to Demelo at the top of the 18. Her fourth goal of the year made it 2-2.
On the Cal Poly kickoff, Brennan Cole's attempt headed towards the top of the net. Schuck got a hand on the ball, giving Cal Poly a corner kick. Schuck punched away the corner, earning the Mustangs another corner. Cal Poly was whistled for offside to end the threat.

Cal Poly tallied eight corner kicks, while Long Beach State posted five. The Mustangs were booked for three yellow cards as Cal Poly committed 17 fouls. LBSU was charged with two yellows as the Beach committed eight fouls.
