Long Beach State Sweeps UC San Diego On The Road To Win Fifth Straight

The Beach got strong performances from Natalie Glenn, Jenna Giambi, Madi Maxwell, and Kameron Bacon in the sweep
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State won its fifth-consecutive match with a 3-0 [25-20, 25-21, 25-22] over UC San Diego on Thursday night at LionTree Arena.
In addition to extending their winning streak to five, the Beach (9-4) improved to 3-0 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Tritons (7-7) drop to 1-2 in league competition.
Natalie Glenn led the LBSU offensive attack with 14 kills on a .455 hitting percentage (14-4-22). She also added eight digs, one block, one assist, and one ace.
Defensively, the Beach were solid holding the Tritons to a .026 attack percentage on the night. Anchoring the backrow for LBSU were Jenna Giambi and Madi Maxwell who each tallied 11 digs in the match. At the net, Kameron Bacon posted a team-leading six blocks.
In addition to her 11 digs, Maxwell also registered five kills, two aces, and two blocks.
Senior setter Zayna Meyer concluded the match with 27 assists, seven digs, three blocks, two kills, and one ace for another efficient performance.
Long Beach State broke the game open early in the first set when the Beach used a 6-0 run to break a 4-4 tie and take a 10-4 advantage. LBSU extended its lead up to six (17-11), before UC San Diego chipped away and pulled within three (23-20). Despite the Tritons' efforts, it was too little too late as the Beach put the game away 25-20.
After UCSD tallied the first point of the second set, Long Beach scored four-straight to jump out in front to a 4-1 lead. The Tritons once again would whittle away the Beach's lead and even the score at 10-10. By the media timeout, Long Beach State had regained the lead, 15-13. The Beach pushed their lead up to five (19-14), but found themselves in a one-point game (20-19) after a 4-0 UCSD run. The Beach utilized a timeout as they held a 22-21 edge on the Tritons. From there, LBSU took the second set 25-20.
Trailing two sets to none, UC San Diego opened the third set jumping out in front 4-1. However, Maxwell alone would even things up at 7-all after recording a kill and back-to-back aces. The Tritons reclaimed the lead, 13-10, but the Beach would not go quietly. LBSU strung together five-straight points to turn its deficit into a lead (16-14). The Beach used a 4-9 run to go up 23-16, but UCSD was not done yet. The Tritons came back and scored four-straight of their own to make it a two-point game (22-20). However, that was as close as the hosts would get. Long Beach State got a kill from Jaida Harris to end the set and complete the sweep.
For UC San Diego, Lauren Brooker led the way with a double-double (23 assists, 10 digs), while Ava McInnes led the offensive attack with eight kills. Emily McDaniel posted seven blocks to go along with seven kills, while hitting .400 (7-1-15).
Long Beach State looks to extend its winning streak this Saturday when the Beach host Hawaii at the Walter Pyramid. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. The match will be televised on ESPNU.
