Men’s Basketball Dominant In Preseason Exhibition With Caltech

10/28/2024 10:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Long Beach State forced 26 turnovers and held the Beavers to 21.7 percent shooting.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State opened up the Chris Acker era inside of the Walter Pyramid with a convincing show, winning 103-35 over Caltech on Monday night. Christian Richardson finished with a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, leading five in double-figures for Long Beach State.

The action was led by defense for Long Beach State. Holding Caltech to just 21.7 percent shooting and forcing the Beavers into 26 turnovers, Long Beach State's defense stole the show early and never stopped.

After a pair of free throws, the first basket of action came off of a steal from Devin Askew, finding Cam Denson for a breakaway dunk, and the rout was on. The Beach opened the game on a 17-0 run, and got to the final minute of the first half before Caltech was able to reach double digits on the scoreboard. The Beach led 46-14 at the half, and more than doubled their lead in the second as the tuneup left the home faithful encouraged for the upcoming season.

In addition to the defensive prowess, the Beach was dominant on the glass, grabbing 48 rebounds to Caltech's 24, and putting home 29 second chance points and 68 points in the paint. Junior Christian Richardson had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, while Devin Askew capably guided the offense with 16 points and 7 assists from the point position. Denson, Derrick Michael Xzavierro and Kam Martin all also finished in double figures, though 11 of the 12 players suited for the Beach scored and all 12 played more than six minutes.

The Beach shot over 50% from the field, owing to strong shot selection and had 49 points off the bench. Even though the contest's stats don't count towards the season total, the 68-point win nearly bested the program record for margin of victory of 72 points, set in 2019.

The official season opener is next, as Long Beach State hosts another SCIAC program, La Verne, to kick off the 2024-25 campaign. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff in the Walter Pyramid, with live coverage on ESPN+.
