LONG BEACH, Calif. – In another sparkling defensive effort, the offense caught up quickly as Long Beach State began the 2024-25 season and the Chris Acker era with a 93-48 win over La Verne in the Walter Pyramid.
Long Beach State (1-0) held La Verne to just 24.1 percent shooting from the field, and jumped out to a quick lead against the Leopards in the first half behind. The Beach found themselves in a cold spell however, and saw a 10-2 lead cut to three with 10 minutes remaining in the first half at 15-12 after a Logen Howard three pointer.
After a quick timeout, the Beach turned to their guards and reestablished control that lasted the rest of the contest. Devin Askew hit a three to start a 13-2 run, and it closed with back-to-back baskets from Askew and TJ Wainwright as the Beach opened a 28-14 lead.
The Long Beach State lead would grow to 24 before the half, and the Beach would continue to fight, growing the lead to 45 before the final moments of the contest.
Askew led Long Beach State with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, while TJ Wainwright added 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. In the frontcourt, Derrick Michael Xzavierro finished with a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Christian Richardson came close, with 8 points and 8 rebounds in his Division I debut. Also making his Division I debut was Kam Martin, as the true freshman kicked off his career in the starting lineup and finished with 11 points. Six other LBSU players scored in a balanced night of scoring.
Long Beach State will now hit the road for a pair of road games, starting with another tournament team from last season in South Dakota State. The Beach will travel to Brookings, S.D. and face the Jackrabbits Friday night in a game carried live on the Summit Network.
