LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team hosted the Beach Tennis Winter Invite on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center and led the way with six doubles victories and five singles wins on the first day of competition.
The tournament, which featured the host Beach, along with Big West opponent CSUN, as well as Nevada and Pacific, began Friday morning with doubles action. Following singles competition, the teams opted to play Sunday's scheduled doubles matches due to expected rain in the area.
"Today was a very good start to the spring semester for us," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "We played solid doubles and singles today. I am so happy with the team's energy and efforts from start to finish today, given that they had to play three matches in one day."
The first day of action pitted Long Beach State against CSUN, and Pacific against Nevada in doubles action. The Beach came out ready to go as they claimed 3-of-4 doubles victories.
Peppi Ramstedt and Rhona Cook paired up on court 1 to defeat Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna by a score of 6-2. The duo of Sarah Medik and Mathilde Tranberg came out victorious over Sofia Dermenjyan and Vitoria Solis Urdiales, 6-3.
Giving the Beach the win in doubles competition was the tandem of Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak as the pair gutted out a 7-6 (4) victory over Angela Ho and Elena Goodman.
Following doubles, the Beach and the WolfPack faced off in singles action and Long Beach State won 5-of-8 matches. Cook downed Amahee Charrier, 6-4, 6-3, and Ramstedt took down Lou Anne Guerbert, 6-1, 6-1. From there, Medik handed Anastasia Luneva a 6-1, 6-3 loss, before Tranberg rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mia Miranda. Capping LBSU's singles victories was Dondonay who secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gabriella Charalampidi.
With the threat of rain coming to Southern California on Saturday and Sunday, the four teams played Sunday's scheduled doubles matches. Long Beach State faced Pacific and came away with three wins.
Collecting their second doubles win of the day, Ramstedt and Cook, along with Akryurek and Becriovic Novak came away victorious. The duo of Ramstedt and Cook handed Klara Kosan and Tomi Main a 6-3 loss, before Akyurek and Becirovic Novak took down Alexis Sam and Indiya McCleod, 7-6 (5).
Rounding out the second set of doubles matches were Dondonay and Medik who earned a 6-4 win over Megan Carmichael and Zoe Clydesdale-Eberle.
