Long Beach State controlled much of the contest, but a wonder goal from Ashleigh Garcia was the difference in a 1-0 loss on the road.
DAVIS, Calif. – Long Beach State controlled much of the first half and had eight corners to UC Davis' 5, but a 78th minute winner from Ashleigh Garcia gave the Aggies a 1-0 win over the Beach in Davis on Thursday.
Long Beach State (6-4-2, 1-1-1 Big West) controlled most of the first half, earning six corners and outshooting UC Davis (5-4-2, 1-0-2 Big West) 5-2 in the first 45. That was most present in the early minutes, as Kassandra Ceja forced UC Davis goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein into a save in the opening minutes, and then Cherrie Cox had another early chance sail just high in the 9th.
The first scoring opportunity for UC Davis didn't truly come until the 19th minute, but Zora Standifer stood tall for the first of her four saves on the night. Opening the second half, Standifer again picked up a save to turn away UC Davis as the majority of the contest continued to be played in the midfield.
With some nice buildup, Long Beach State nearly freed Elysia Laramie for a one-on-one with Goldstein in the 72nd, but the final touch wasn't quite clean enough for the Beach, and the breakthrough for UC Davis came minutes later.
Coming off of an Aggie corner, substitute Ashleigh Garcia was able to find just enough space for an outside of the box effort which she struck pure to best Standifer for the first and only time on the night and give UC Davis a 1-0 lead.
Pressing forward, Long Beach State had one final chance as Cox was able to slip past two defenders and send a low cross that went all the way through, but was just a half-step in front of Summer Laskey who wasn't able to finish off what would have been the equalizer in the closing minutes.
Long Beach State suffered their first loss of the conference season, and will get an opportunity to quickly bounce back this Sunday at CSU Bakersfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Bakersfield, with live coverage provided on ESPN+.
