Long Beach State lost 3-0 after an early goal surrendered and 11 saves from Hollee Hercik.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – An early goal and a penalty shook up the shape of Sunday's game at CSU Bakersfield, and Runners keeper Hollee Hercik had the better of the Beach on the day in a 3-0 win for CSUB on the road in Bakersfield.
Long Beach State (6-5-2, 1-2-1 Big West) outshot the Runners 23-14 and forced Hercik into 11 saves while holding a possession advantage at 58% but the early strike from CSUB was ultimately the game-winner.
CSU Bakersfield (2-6-3, 1-1-2 Big West) scored in the sixth minute with a poachers' goal to change the complexion of the game, as a flick on from the endline found Jette Zimmer on the back post for a tap int to give the Runners and early 1-0 lead.
Long Beach State immediately turned up the tempo, and Makayla Demelo forced Hollee Hercik into an early save in the 7th minute, and then Elysia Laramie came free in the 9th but Hercik was again up to the challenge.
Cherrie Cox had a great opportunity blocked in the 25th minute as the Beach had seized back momentum, but the Runners doubled the lead in the 33rd minute. Maddy Perez was called for a foul in the box on Karen Flores to set up a penalty. Zora Standifer made the save on the shot from Catalina Roggerone, but Stevie Reynolds was able to tap home the rebound to make the score 2-0.
Laramie nearly pulled back one minutes late on a header that shaved the crossbar, and Hercik denied the Beach again in the closing seconds of the half by turning aside Kassandra Ceja. Ceja opened the second half with another great chance saved.
Yet another chance came minutes later as Cox was fouled in the box, but Hercik made the save on the ensuing penalty and in a sign of the luck on the day, Long Beach State was just barely unable to tap in the rebound similar to the Runners in the first half.
Reynolds added a second on just the third corner kick of the day from CSUB, as the far post run led to another goal for the sophomore to make the score 3-0 in the 62nd.
Standifer finished the day with four saves in addition to her turning away the penalty, while Cox and Demelo each had four shots for the Beach.
Long Beach State will return to George Allen Field and continue Big West action against Cal Poly on Thursday, October 5. Live coverage will be available through ESPN+.
