
The Beach Open Big West Action with a 3-2 Victory Over Cal Poly

Natalie Glenn has a career match with 21 kills on a .472 clip, while also putting up four blocks
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State opened Big West action in a thrilling five-set contest on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid. The Beach came back from a 6-1 deficit in the fifth set, to rally and defeat Cal Poly, 3-2 [25-21, 22-25, 25-9, 26-28, 15-13].
Junior outside hitter Natalie Glenn led the Beach (7-4, 1-0 Big West) with a monster performance as she registered a career-high 21 kills on a .472 attack percentage. Glenn contributed on all sides of the ball as she also posted a season-high eight digs, a career-high four blocks, and two aces on the night.
With Glenn leading the way, LBSU held the advantage over Cal Poly (6-7, 0-1 Big West) in kills (68-52), hitting percentage (.271-.172), assists (63-48), aces (11-3), and digs (64-42). The conference foes matched each other with 8.0 blocks apiece.
Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer led the Beach to a .271 attack percentage as she distributed the ball to each of her hitters getting three players in double-figure kills. Meyer would go on to finish the match with a double-double (49 assists, 11 digs), while posting seven kills, two blocks, and two aces.
In addition to Glenn, outside hitters Abby Karich and Elise Agi also reached double-digits as the duo knocked down 13 kills each.
Karich's 13 kills came on a .290 clip, while she also recorded four digs and two aces. Agi finished with a double-double chipping in a career-best 13 digs to go along with three assists, three aces, and two blocks.
On the defensive end, the Beach had four players log double-figure digs. Coming in behind Agi's team-leading 13 were Meyer (11), junior libero Savana Chacon (10), and junior defensive specialist Jenna Giambi (10).
Also contributing defensively was junior middle blocker Kameron Bacon who put up four blocks to keep the Mustangs off balance.
The first set was a close one that saw the two teams go back-and-forth throughout. Cal Poly used a 5-0 run to go up 13-10, but Long Beach State would not go away. The Beach went on a 4-0 run of the their own, highlighted by an ace from Glenn to take a 17-16 edge. After the Mustangs regained the lead, 20-19, Long Beach State rattled off five-straight points as Kailia Lopez came off the bench and served up a pair of aces to push the game to set point, 24-20. The Beach would go on to take the first set, 25-21.
The Beach opened the second set with three-consecutive points to take a quick 3-0 advantage. The set would be much like the first as the conference foes traded points until they found themselves deadlocked at 22-all after a kill from Glenn. However, the Mustangs would close the frame with three-straight points to win 25-22 and even the match at one set apiece.
Long Beach State commanded the third set from the start. The Beach hit .375 in the frame and forced Cal Poly into a negative attack percentage (-.160). LBSU jumped out in front early with a 6-1 lead thanks for a pair of aces from Meyer and an ace from Karich. The Beach broke the game wide open with a 9-0 run to take a dominating 18-5 advantage. From there, LBSU cruised to a 25-9 victory.
The fourth set saw an incredible 18 ties throughout the game as Long Beach State and Cal Poly fought each other hard. Both teams hit over .300 in the frame with the Beach leading the way .381 to .361. Karich knocked down a kill to even the game at 22-all, as the Mustangs called a timeout. From there, Cal Poly sent it to set point, 24-23. Long Beach State would show its grit as the Beach fought off three set points, before the Mustangs took the game, 28-26, and forced a fifth set.
Cal Poly rode the momentum from the fourth set into the fifth and opened the game with a 6-1 lead. The Beach called a timeout and came back ready to go. LBSU chipped away at the Mustangs lead and tied the game at 7-all on a kill from Agi. A block assist from Glenn and freshman middle blocker Ella Lomigora gave the Beach their first lead of the set, 10-9 and kicked off a 4-0 run that gave Long Beach a 13-9 lead over Cal Poly. After a 3-0 run from the Mustangs cut the Beach's lead down to one (13-12), Long Beach State came out of a timeout and claimed the set and match on a kill from Karich, 15-13.
The Mustangs were led by Tommi Stockham's 17 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Annabelle Thalken added 11 kills, while Emme Bullis posted 27 assists, and Samantha Callahan added 13 assists and 12 digs. Libero Jolei Akima also registered 12 digs to anchor the defense. At the net, Kate Slack led the way with four blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they host UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
