The Beach Close the Preseason with a 3-1 Victory Against New Mexico State at the Wildcat Classic

9/16/2023 1:10:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Elise Agi turned in a career performance with a double-double to lead LBSU to their third-straight win

TUCSON – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team received several career- and season-high performances as the Beach earned a hard-fought 3-1 [25-19, 25-16, 25-27, 35-33] victory over New Mexico State on Saturday morning at the Wildcat Classic.

The Beach (6-4) closed out the preseason winning three-straight contests, while the Aggies fell to 7-4 on the year.

The evenly matched contest saw the Beach hold the edge on the Aggies in kills (57-56), assists (56-55), aces (8-4), and blocks (11-4). Meanwhile, New Mexico State led the way in digs with 72 to Long Beach State's 70.

LBSU was led offensively by junior outside hitter Elise Agi who turned in a career-high performance with 19 kills on a .235 attack percentage, while adding 10 digs for a double-double. Agi also put up five blocks, one assist, and one ace in an all-around performance for the San Francisco, Calif., native.

Joining Agi with a double-double on the day was setter Zayna Meyer. The redshirt sophomore logged a season-high 50 assists to go along with 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the year, and third in as many days.

Meyer passed the ball well, getting three players in double-figures. Coming in behind Agi, were outside hitter Natalie Glenn, who recorded a career-high 16 kills, and middle blocker Kameron Bacon who finished the match with a season-best 11 kills on 21 errorless swings as she hit a team-leading .524 on the day.

Bacon also led the Beach at the net putting up a season-high seven blocks.

Long Beach State turned in a stout performance on defense as the Beach boasted five players in double-figure digs. Libero Savana Chacon led the way with 19 digs, while defensive specialists Jenna Giambi and Nicole Hoff followed with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The first two sets were all Long Beach State. The Beach used several scoring runs in the first set to take a 19-14 lead over New Mexico State. Glenn knocked down back-to-back kills to send it to set point, 24-17, before LBSU came away with the 25-19 win.

The second set was much like the first as Long Beach State broke the game open with a few scoring runs. The Beach found themselves leading 19-12 as the Aggeis called for a timeout. The break did not stop the Beach as they surged ahead and took the second set by nine (25-16) after a block assist from Bacon and Meyer.

The Aggies made things interesting in the third set. After dropping the first two games by at least six or more points, New Mexico State came back and claimed the third set, 27-25. It was a battle as Long Beach State fought off four set points from the Aggies, before coming up just short.

New Mexico State took an early 3-1 lead to start the fourth set. After the Aggies took a 15-10 lead, the Beach went on a 5-0 run to even the score at 15-all. From there, the two teams stayed within striking distance of each other, never letting the other lead by more than two points. A block assist by Abby Karich and Bacon set it to match point for the Beach. However, the game would not come to a close easily. The two battled each other through six set points and five match points before Long Beach State managed to score three-straight points on back-to-back kills from Glenn followed by a match-winning kill from Bacon to win 35-33.

The fourth set alone saw LBSU and NMSU battle each other through 20 ties and 11 lead changes.

New Mexico State had three players in double-figures as Starr Williams (15 kills), Mari Sharp (12 kills), and Ryleigh Whitekettle (11 kills) led the way. Bianca Perez finished the match with 22 assists and 14 digs for a double-double. Meanwhile, libero Darian Markham led a group of three double-figure dig performers with 18 digs. Kacia Brown rounded out the trio with 15 digs, while adding seven kills, three assists, three aces, and two blocks.

Long Beach State will open Big West action on Friday, Sept. 22 against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
