The Beach hit a season-high .429 as a team in the straight-set win on Friday

TUCSON – Long Beach State went into the McKale Center on Friday evening and made quick work of Alabama State in the Wildcat Classic. The Beach cruised to a 3-0 sweep [25-15, 25-20, 25-15] as they hit a season-high .429 in the contest.

The Beach (5-4) led the Lady Hornet (1-11) in every statistical category. Long Beach State recorded 48 kills to Alabama State's 33, while distributing 47 assists to ASU's 32. At the service line, the Beach registered five aces, while their defense was perfect with zero reception errors. The LBSU defense also held the edge over Alabama State in digs (42-33) and blocks (5-1).

Long Beach State was firing on all cylinders as the Beach were paced by redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer who finished the contest with a double-double (39 assists, 10 digs). It was Meyer's fourth double-double of the season and second in as many days. In addition, Meyer added four kills on eight errorless swings for a .500 clip, while also posting two blocks, and an ace.

Meyer distributed the ball well as Hanna Lesiak made the most of her passes knocking down 11 kills to lead the Beach. Lesiak also contributed eight digs, two assists, and one block, while hitting .450 (11-2-20).

Joining Lesiak on the offensive end were Ella Lomigora and Natalie Glenn who each registered nine kills. Lomigora hit .538 (9-2-13) on the night, while Glenn hit .421 (9-1-19) to go along with four digs, one ace, and one block.

Libero Savana Chacon anchored the defense with 12 digs as she helped keep Alabama State to a .175 attack percentage. Chacon also chipped in five assists and an ace.

Meanwhile, the Beach got a team-leading five blocks from middle Kameron Bacon, who also added seven kills on a .455 attack percentage (7-2-11).

Overall, it was an all-around team effort that saw the Beach gel together and cruise to their second-straight sweep of the tournament.

Alabama State was quick to take a 3-0 lead to start the match. However, Long Beach State wasted no time turning things around as the Beach used a 6-1 run to take a 7-5 edge over the Lady Hornets. After a few back and forths, the Beach went on a 5-1 run to open an 18-13 lead. Following Alabama State's called timeout, the Beach continued to surge. With Nicole Hoff back to serve, the defensive specialist led LBSU on a 6-0 run that culminated in a kill from Glenn to win the game, 25-15.

The second set was the closest as the two teams fought through 10 ties and five lead changes. Both teams found their groove offensively as the Beach hit .394 and the Lady Hornets hit .300. Long Beach State went up 18-16 after scoring five-straight points, but Alabama State was quick to counter. The Lady Hornets stayed competitive and took a 19-18 lead over LBSU. Once again, Long Beach sent Hoff back to serve and she led them on a 7-1 run to close the game (25-20) and take a 2-0 lead over Alabama State.

Long Beach State was hot offensively in the third set. The Beach hit a whopping .548 with 19 kills on 31 swings, while committing just two errors. The LBSU defense was just as effective, holding ASU to a .156 clip and forcing five attack errors.

Alabama State opened the third set with a 3-1 lead, but a 4-0 run from LBSU to give the Beach a 6-4 advantage was all it took for the Beach to take control. From there, Long Beach State led the rest of the set. The Beach broke the game wide open with an 8-1 run as they claimed a 16-8 lead over the Lady Hornets. LBSU rolled to a 10-point victory (25-15) to complete the sweep.

A'Nylah Cobb led the way for Alabama State with 13 kills on a .321 attack percentage. Setters Emily Brooks and Madison Beasley finished with 14 assists and 11 assists, respectively, while adding eight and seven digs. Libero Temperance Chatman also contributed eight digs, while Ma'Kayla Jones collected the Lady Hornets' lone block of the contest.

Long Beach State will close out the Wildcat Classic on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m., when the Beach face New Mexico State. The match will be streamed live via FloVolleyball.
