Savana Chacon recorded a career-high 29 digs in Long Beach State’s setback

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Savana Chacon turned in a career performance with 29 digs in a back-and-forth contest between Long Beach State and Washington on Friday night at the Walter Pyramid. However, the Beach's fourth-set rally was cut short as they dropped a 3-1 [25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 25-27] decision to Huskies.

Washington (3-1) hit .201 on the night to go along with 11.0 blocks and nine aces as they held Long Beach State (2-2) to a .158 attack percentage. The Beach, however, logged 76 digs in the backrow to UW's 63.

Chacon's 29 digs led the Beach to a strong defensive performance which also saw Hanna Lesiak register 10 digs, while Jenna Giambi added eight, and Nicole Hoff chipped in five to go along with a career-high three aces.

On the offensive side, Zayna Meyer tallied 42 assists as she helped Katie Kennedy, Elise Agi, and Abby Karich all reach double figure kills. Kennedy finished the match with 12 kills on a .292 clip, while Agi added 12 kills of her own on a .259 attach percentage. Karich rounded out the group with 10 kills.

Meyer was consistent on both sides of the ball, as she logged seven digs, four kills, and led the with three block assists.

The contest was a battle throughout as the two evenly matched team fought each other through a total of 21 ties and 11 lead changes. In the first set alone, there were 14 ties as the Beach and the Huskies matched each other point-for-point. Long Beach State, however, came away victorious as the Beach rattled off three-straight points to push it to set point (24-19), before closing out the game with a 25-20 win.

After two early ties in the second set, Washington found its groove and took control of the set hitting .333 and knocking down 13 kills. The Huskies used a pair of 5-0 runs to jump out in front of the Beach 21-13, forcing an LBSU timeout. Long Beach battled back and chipped Washington's lead down to four (23-19), but that was as close as they would come as the visitors put the game away, 25-19, to even the match 1-1.

The third set was all Washington as UW opened the frame on a 6-1 run forcing Long Beach State to call an early timeout. The Beach whittled away at the Huskies' lead and made it a two-point game (13-11) after a pair of kills from Agi followed by a kill from Kennedy. After a Washington timeout, the Beach pulled within one (15-14), but the Huskies surged ahead using a 5-0 run to take a 20-14 advantage. UW closed set three with three-straight points, winning, 25-17.

Down two sets to one, Long Beach State wasted no time getting on the board in the fourth set. The Beach used a 5-0 run to take a quick 5-2 lead and after scoring another three-straight held an 8-4 edge. Washington stayed close and eventually evened the game at 10-all, before going on a 6-0 run to take a 17-13 lead over the Beach. From there, Washington pushed its lead up to six (22-16). Despite being down by half a dozen point, Long Beach State showed its grit as the Beach scored four-consecutive points, thanks to three points from Agi, to close the gap and make it a two-point game (22-20). The Huskies used a timeout and sent the game to match point (24-20), but the gritty Beach was not done yet. A kill by Kennedy gave the Beach the sideout and Chacon went back to serve. Chacon's performance led LBSU to five-straight points, including an ace serve to make it 24-23. With the crowd on their feet, Ella Lomigora scored back-to-back kills to give Long Beach State a 25-24 lead and send it to set point for the Beach. The Huskies had their backs against the wall, and managed to score three-straight points to close out the set and match, 27-25.

Washington had three players score in double-figure kills as Madi Endsley led the way with 18. May Pertofsky notched a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Molly Wilson also registered a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs. Rounding out the Huskies' double-figure scorers was Audra Wilmes who finished the match with 10 kills, while adding nine digs, and three aces.  At the net, Elise Hani led the team with six blocks.
