Long Beach State Wins Gritty Four-Setter Over Indiana

The Beach got a number of solid performances as they handed Indiana their first loss of the season
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a gritty performance on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid as the Beach downed Indiana, 3-1 [28-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21] marking LBSU's first win over a Big Ten opponent since 2015.
The win by the Beach (2-1) handed the Hoosiers (3-1) their first loss of the 2023 season. LBSU hit .223 in the match, while serving up seven aces and out-digging Indiana 57-39.
Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer finished the match with 37 assists as she distributed the ball well finding five hitters for at least 15 or more attacks. Leading the offensive charge was Abby Karich who tallied 14 kills, while Katie Kennedy contributed 13. Maura Hayes got her first start of the season and posted nine kills, while Ella Lomigora made her collegiate debut with six kills and two blocks.
Defensively, Long Beach State was stout in the backcourt as Hanna Lesiak logged 13 digs, while libero Savana Chacon posted 11. Defensive specialist Jenna Giambi recorded nine digs, while Nicole Hoff and Meyer registered eight each. With the LBSU defense rolling, Indiana was held to a .168 attack percentage and only hit over .200 in one set.
Long Beach State took an early 7-4 lead over Indiana with a 5-0 run in the first set. However, the Hoosiers bounced back with a 4-0 run of their own to take an 11-10 edge. The Beach called a timeout as they fell behind 14-12, and managed to turn things around with a 19-17 lead on a kill from Karich. The Hoosiers would not go away as they stayed close (23-22) after tallying four-straight points. The intense first set saw both teams battle through four set points, before Long Beach State earned a 28-26 win.
The back and forth between the two teams continued into the second set as the Beach and the Hoosiers battled each other through 15 ties and five lead changes. Finally, LBSU used a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Karich to push the game to set point (24-22). The Beach would go on to win the second set on a dump from Meyer, 25-23.
Leading two sets to none, Long Beach State took a quick 4-1 lead over Indiana to start the third set. The Beach extended its lead to five (7-2) as Indiana called a timeout after a 6-1 Long Beach run. With the game looking to be heading in LBSU's favor, the Hoosiers slowly chipped away and cut the Beach's lead down to one (17-16), before tying it up at 19-all. After trading several points, Indiana managed to squeak out a 26-24 win and force a fourth set.
LBSU came out firing in the fourth set. The Beach hit .385 to the Hoosiers' .184 and controlled most of the set. The Beach broke a 2-2 tie on a solo block from Meyer which highlighted a 5-0 run that would put the hosts up 6-2. Long Beach didn't trail the rest of the way as they led by as many as 10 (21-11) after a kill from Karich. Following that kill, Indiana rattled off six-straight points to cut LBSU's lead down to four (21-17). The Beach called a timeout and came out of the break ready to go as they sent it to match point (24-20) on a kill from Elise Agi. Long Beach State put the game and match away on a kill from Hayes to win by a score of 25-21.
Indiana had three players in double figure kills as Savannah Kjolhede (13 kills), Candela Alonso-Corcelles (12 kills), and Kaley Rammelsberg (10 kills) led the way. Camryn Haworth dished out 46 assists, while Ramsey Gary logged 14 digs.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against Washington. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
