Long Beach State Falls to a Tough LMU Team in Straight Sets

The Beach put up 9.0 total team blocks, but struggled offensively in the setback to the Lions
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Volleyball turned in a gritty performance, but was unable to get their offense going as the Beach fell in three [24-26, 17-25, 19-25] to Loyola Marymount on Sunday at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (1-1) battled in the first set, but struggled offensively in the second and third sets as the Lions (1-1) led in hitting percentage (.217-.064), kills (39-27), assists (36-23), aces (5-1), digs (35-28), and blocks (10-9).
Katie Kennedy led the way hitting .263 with nine kills on the night, while putting up three blocks. Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer dished out 19 assists, while adding four kills, three digs, and two blocks.
Junior libero Savana Chacon anchored the defense in the backrow with 10 digs. Meanwhile, Kameron Bacon patrolled the net putting up six blocks in the match.
LBSU opened the match on a 4-0 run. LMU chipped away and made it a two-point game (9-7), before tying it up 13-all. From there, it went back and forth with the two teams trading points. The Lions used a 4-1 to take a 19-17 lead before pushing it to set point (24-21). The Beach battled back and evened the score at 24-all, but Loyola Marymount came away with the 26-24 victory.
Riding the high from their first set win, Loyola Marymount jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The Lions went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-4 lead as the Beach called a timeout to regroup. LBSU managed to string together a couple 3-0 runs as they trailed by four (16-12). However, LMU surged ahead and won 25-17.
The third set saw LMU once again take a quick lead (4-1). The Lions extended their lead to five (8-3) as the Beach called a timeout. Long Beach State put together a couple of short scoring runs to cut the Lions' lead down to one (11-10), but that was as close as the Beach would get. LMU went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-11 advantage, before cruising to a 25-19 win.
LMU was led by Jacquelyn Moore's eight kills on a .312 attack percentage. Setters Isabella Bareford and Mia Schafer finished the match with 17 and 12 kills respectively. Defensively, libero Sam Hastings logged nine digs, while Moore posted five blocks at the net.
The Beach will be back in action on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m., when they host Indiana at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
