Beach Come Up Short In First Road Test Of The Year At No. 11 BYU

8/24/2023 8:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Zora Standifer made five saves while Kassandra Ceja and Jordan Candelaria each had two shots on target.

PROVO, Utah – Long Beach State carried the early momentum in a back-and-forth contest on the road at No. 11 BYU, but the Cougars got a lift from a strike from distance in the closing minutes of the first half on the way to a 2-0 win.

The Cougars outshot the Beach by just one on the night, 14-13, and each side made five saves on the evening.

After settling into the game in the early minutes, Long Beach State started to control the game, and found Cherrie Cox for an open look, saved by BYU's Savanna Mason, but the first great chance of the contest. The Beach would continue to put shots on goal, forcing Mason into four first half saves, but Long Beach State was unable to move ahead on the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes.

BYU withstood that push and opened the scoring with the first goal in a stunner against the run of play. Coming off of a strong stretch of possession for LBSU, the Cougars saw a bouncing ball fall into the path of Olivia Katoa, who found a clean connection from nearly 30 yards out that clipped the crossbar and in for the opening goal.

In the closing minutes of the half, Zora Standifer helped keep the Beach within striking distance. On a free kick outside of the box, a friendly return bounce off of the wall following the initial kick fell to Ellie Walbruch, but Standifer was equal to the challenge with a great save on the unobstructed shot.

The Cougars extended their lead in the early minutes of the second as Olivia Smith was able to turn the corner find Bella Folino entering the box to make the score 2-0.

Kassandra Ceja had an opportunity to match Katoa's first half effort in the 53rd minute, but a diving Mason was able to keep the Beach off the board. A scary moment them came 10 minutes later, as Kendell Peterson fell on top of Cox after a collision in the box, leading to a significant delay as Cox was removed from the field under the supervision of paramedics and trainers.

After play was restarted, Long Beach State continued to fight, putting up the best chance of the remainder of the game in the 78th minute. Earning a free kick just outside of the box, Brooklyn Antonucci sent a ball off of the crossbar and out in the final major chance of the contest.

The road trip continues on Sunday, when Long Beach State travels to face San Diego State at 7 p.m. Live coverage will be available through the Mountain West Network from the SDSU Sports Deck.
