Long Beach State picks up two of the three final awards after a three-game sweep of Cal State Fullerton to win the Big West Championship.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Shannon Haddad and Makayla Medellin were chosen as Big West Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week respectively to close out the regular season after two incredible performances to end the year as Big West champions.
Haddad, a three-time Big West Pitcher of the Week, went head-to-head with Cal State Fullerton's Myka Sutherlin in two starts and was fantastic, going 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA. Allowing just one earned run in the team's series opening win over the Titans, Haddad pitched her 13th complete game of the season. That victory set the stage for Long Beach State's sweep, getting the first of three wins the Beach needed to claim the Big West title, one game in front of the Titans.
Tied in the standings going into the final game, Haddad and Sutherlin matched up once more, and Haddad once again came out on top, throwing her eighth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton. Over the weekend, Haddad allowed just six hits over 14.0 innings pitched.
On the offensive side, outfielder Makayla Medellin was named the Big West Freshman of the Week for the fourth time in 2023. Batting third throughout the weekend, Medellin hit .333 with a walk and two RBI on the weekend along with a sacrifice hit and sac fly to help lead the Beach to the trophy.
Medellin's RBI single opened the scoring in the first game, a 3-2 win, and then she had the key RBI in the final game of the series, a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to score the only run of the game in a 1-0 win over the Titans.
The pair along with the rest of the team will advance to the NCAA postseason after winning the Big West, and will compete in the Stanford Regional beginning on Friday, May 19.
