Long Beach State topped No. 18 Pepperdine, 3-2, before sweeping CSULA.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Beach celebrated their seniors with a pair of victories on Thursday afternoon in their first and last matches on the LBSU Sand Courts. LBSU (19-11) started the day with a 3-2 win over No. 18 Pepperdine before closing out the day with a 5-0 sweep of Cal State LA.
Starting the day with the bigger of their two matches, the Beach had a rematch with the Waves after falling 3-2 them earlier in the season. Roles were reversed this time around as Long Beach State came out on top by the same score.
Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah picked up the first point for the Beach with a win in flight number two, but Pepperdine answered with a win in the fours. Haley Carrington and Emily Mattoon responded by putting the Beach back out in front by winning the fifth flight. Once again, the Waves responded.
It all came down to the third flight with the score knotted up at two points apiece. After a 21-17 first set victory, Natalie Glenn and Megan Widener jumped out to an early lead in the second set as they rolled to a 21-16 win the second set to secure the dual for Long Beach State.
Prior to the dual with Cal State LA, the Beach honored their four seniors. With their families on site, Maggie Walters, Sydney Stevens, Mari Molina, and Emily Mattoon were all honored in the ceremony.
The Beach made quick work of the Golden Eagles following the senior celebration with four of the flights going straight sets and the Beach pair allowing 11 points or fewer in all of them. The first flight went three sets, but the result was the same as Long Beach State completed the 5-0 sweep.
Only one more week remains before the Big West Championships. The Beach will play their final duals in San Luis Obispo with Cal Poly hosting the Center of Effort Challenge.
