Beach Volleyball Sweeps Twice on Day One of Big West Championships; Advances to Semi-Finals

Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah also set a new school record for most individual wins in single-season program history.
HONOLULU, Hawai'i – No. 11 Long Beach State dominated the field on day one of the Big West Championships with a pair of 5-0 sweeps of Sacramento State and UC Davis. With the two wins, the Beach advances to the semi-finals on Saturday morning.
Long Beach State made quick work of Sacramento State in their first round matchup with all five flights winning in straight sets. Mari Molina and Emily Mattoon posted the most lopsided scores and first point of the dual with 21-7, 21-13 set victories, followed closely by Christine Deroos and Maggie Walters in four's with wins of 21-8, 21-13.
Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah recorded the clinching point in flight one with 21-12, 21-16 set wins. The victory marks their 30th of the season and puts the freshmen as the all-time record holders for most individual wins in a single-season. The record comes just a week after they broke the single-season pairs win record.
Moving on to the second round, the next matchup came against three-seeded UC Davis. Once again, the Beach secured the dual quickly with straight set victories in flights four, three, and one. It took a third set in two's and five's but the result was the same for another 5-0 sweep.
The two wins sends Long Beach State to the semi-final matchup tomorrow morning with top-seeded and No. 8 ranked Hawai'i. The top two teams of the Big West will battle it out at 9:15 a.m. HT (12:15 p.m. PT) at Queen's Beach.
