The first-year pair earns their second conference weekly honor of the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah have been named the Big West Pair of the Week after a historic weekend in San Luis Obispo. It is the second weekly honor for the freshmen pair this season.
Competing in the second flight at the Center of Effort Challenge, the first-year duo went a perfect 4-0 with wins over No. 2 USC, No. 4 Florida State, No. 6 Loyola Marymount, and the hosts Cal Poly. The three ranked victories all came in three sets, two of which were comeback efforts, while the win over Cal Poly was in straight sets.
They have now won nine straight duals and 22 of their last 23.
Their win over USC in the first match of the Saturday duals marked their 28th of the year, setting a new program record for most pairs wins in a single season. The record was previously held by Jenelle Hudson and Megan Kruidhoff back in 2017 when they went 27-5 for the season.
Gementera and Hagenah are also tied for the individual wins single season record with 29 this season. With one more victory, they will become the first student-athletes in LBSU history to eclipse the 30-win mark with Sasha Karelov winning 29 matches during the 2018 season.
