LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's Cristian Martinez and TJ Wiggins have earned Big West weekly honors after making their LBSU outdoor debuts over the weekend. Martinez was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Wiggins was the Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Martinez ran both the 800m and 1500m races on Saturday of the Beach Opener. He won the 1500m race with a time of 3:51.14 in his first outdoor event of the year. The time is not only a new lifetime-best, but ranks as the fastest in the country.
The Galt, Calif. native was back in action hours later for the 800m where he would finish just six-hundredths of a second behind his teammate for the win. His time of 1:51.11 currently ranks as the third fastest time in NCAA and second in The Big West.
Wiggins made not only his Long Beach State debut at the Beach Opener, but his collegiate debut. The freshman competed in just one event, men's Discus, but was impressive finishing second overall and first among all collegiate competitors.
In his first ever collegiate attempt, he posted a lifetime-best throw of 55.22m (181-2) only to improve on that on his second attempt. His final mark would end up being 56.39m (185-0) which falls just outside the LBSU all-time top ten.
