The Beach lost a pair of close contests to No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 12 California.

MALIBU, Calif. – The No. 14 ranked Long Beach State beach volleyball team played their postponed contests with No. 18 Pepperdine and No. 12 California on Monday, falling 3-2 in both duals. The Beach moves to 2-6 on the year with the two losses.

Long Beach State got the rescheduled matches started with the hosts, No. 18 Pepperdine. The Waves jumped out to a quick two-point lead winning both the fourth and second flights. Looking for the reverse sweep, Natalie Glenn/Maggie Walters continue their impressive start to the season with a straight-set win in flight number five, 22-20 and 21-18. The freshmen duo of Malia Gementera/Taylor Hagenah stayed hot on the sand with another third flight win, taking it 21-15 and 21-14 to even the score at 2-2.

It all came down to Christine Deroos/Mari Molina in the first flight to decide the match. The first set was back-and-forth but ultimately went to Pepperdine's Alexus McLeod/McKenna Thomas. Deroos/Molina would answer though with a quick 21-15 win the second set. Needing extra points to decide the winner, a 16-14 third set score went to the Waves just narrowly edging out Long Beach for the dual.

After a quick turnaround, the Beach was right back in action against No. 12 California. Similar to their first match of the day, the Golden Bears took the first two points for an early 2-0 lead. Going perfect on the day once again, Glenn/Walters won the fifth flight for the first LBSU point of the match.

Cal held a big advantage in both the first and third flights with first set victories, but both Deroos/Molina and Gementera/Hagenah would end up battling back to force a third set decision. Unfortunately, a 15-7 set win in the first flight would secure the dual for California. Gementera/Hagenah would go on to win the third flight to go 2-0 on the day, but the Beach would still drop their third straight dual.

Long Beach State will be back in action this weekend as they compute in the Battle for L.A. Their Saturday duals will be hosted by USC while Sunday will be at UCLA.
