Softball’s Win Streak Snapped At CSUN

3/31/2023 4:30:00 PM | Softball

Errors undid the lead created by home runs from Carly Robbins, Emily Salazar.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Three errors undid a strong start from Long Beach State, who saw their eight-game winning streak snapped with a 5-4 loss at CSUN.

Long Beach State (16-15, 6-1 Big West) grabbed the lead right away in the first inning. Sara Olson drew a walk and Carly Robbins hit her second home run of the year with one on, lifting a no-doubter to right field to give the Beach a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Robbins had  another big hit in the fourth inning, leading off the frame with a double and coming home to score on an RBI groundout from Cam Cecil to extend the LBSU lead to 3-0.

Shannon Haddad didn't allow a hit through the first three innings of the contest, but CSUN (13-14, 5-2 Big West) broke through in the fourth inning. Mikayla Carman lifted a double to left field, and a single from Kaylee Escutia brought home the first run of the game for the Matadors, making the score 3-1.

The first cracks defensively showed up in the fifth inning. A perfect bunt put the lead runner on, and after a sacrifice, the Beach looked to be close to getting out of the inning. An overthrow on a bunt single brought home a second run, and then after a single from Carman, Teah Theis was unable to control the throw to the plate which would have retired Carys Murakami, instead tying the game 3-3.

The Beach battled back, as Emily Salazar cracked a home run off of the foul pole in left field to once again regain the lead, 4-3 after the top of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, the Matadors mounted a one-out rally with a single and a double putting two runners in scoring position. A popup to first base gave the Beach a second out, but trying to catch the lead runner off of third proved to be very costly as an overthrow scored both runners to give CSUN their first lead of the day at 5-4.

The Beach put two on in the seventh, but Allie Gardiner was able to finish off the game and earn the win for CSUN, handing Long Beach State their first conference loss and a hard-luck loss for Shannon Haddad, who only allowed one run in an inning without errors behind the sophomore.

The teams return to Northridge tomorrow to close out the series with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. The first game will be broadcast live on ESPN+, while live stats for both games can be found at www.beachlivestats.com.
