LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 4 Long Beach State came into LionTree Arena and rolled to a 3-0 sweep [25-22, 25-13, 25-16] victory over UC San Diego on Friday night.
The Beach (15-3, 4-1 Big West) hit .340 on the night, while putting up 14.0 total team blocks as they forced the Tritons (7-13, 1-5 Big West) into a negative attack percentage (-.024). Long Beach State led in every statistical category as they picked up their third-straight victory.
Freshman setter Island Doty made his first career start and made the most of it. The Colorado Springs, Calif., native turned in an excellent performance as he distributed 17 assists, to go along with five digs, four blocks, three kills, and one ace. Doty's three kills came on four errorless swings on his way to a .750 attack percentage. His solid passing led LBSU to their 11th match of the season in which they hit over .300.
Doty did a good job spreading the ball around as Spencer Olivier led the way with seven kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while Sotiris Siapanis and Clarke Godbold each recorded six kills. Grant Marocchi and Nathan Harlan came off the bench adding three kills each, while Shane Holdaway and Simon Torwie finished the match with two kills apiece in the all-around team effort.
Defensive is where the Beach really shined as they put up 14.0 total team blocks with Torwie leading the way with 10 as he posted one solo stop and nine block assists. The double-digit block performance marks the first in Torwie's career and the first for Long Beach State since 2021 when Simon Andersen recorded two double-figure block showings that year.
Joining Torwie at the net was Godbold as he put up six blocks, while Doty added four, and Olivier and Siapanis each recorded two.
In the backrow, Olivier picked up six digs, while junior libero Mason Briggs logged five, as did Doty. Godbold contributed four digs, while Holdaway and Siapanis each chipped in a pair.
The Beach opened the match and quickly took a 4-1 lead over the Tritons. But a pair of 3-0 runs by UCSD evened the score at 13-all. The set went back and forth from there, before Long Beach State brought in Harlan as a serving sub. With Harlan at the endline, LBSU went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-19 edge over the Tritons. That would do it for the Beach as they went on to take the first set, 25-22, on a kill from Holdaway.
Long Beach State outhit UC San Diego .273 to -.107 in the second set and used several small scoring runs to take a 12-5 lead. The Beach broke the game open when they went on a 10-1 run, that saw two UCSD timeouts called, and jumped out to an 18-6 advantage after a kill from Siapanis. In the second set alone, the Beach put up 6.5 total team blocks as Torwie led the way with four. LBSU led the rest of the way and cruised to a 25-13 victory thanks to a kill from Olivier.
Leading two sets to none, Long Beach State finished things off in the third set as the Beach, once again, forced the Tritons into a negative attack percentage (-.129). LBSU rolled over UCSD as the Beach used a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead and never look back. The Beach led the rest of the way as they took a double-figure lead (19-9) after an ace by Connor Bloom. Long Beach State continued to roll as they came away with set and match on a kill from Olivier to make it 25-16.
UC San Diego was led by Ryan Ka who finished the match with nine kills and seven digs, while setter Gabriel Dyer dished out 21 assists.
Long Beach State and UC San Diego will face off again on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m., at the Walter Pyramid.
