LONG BEACH, Calif. –
No. 4 Long Beach State Men's Volleyball excelled on both sides of the ball on Saturday night as they rolled to a 3-0 [25-15, 25-17, 25-13] sweep over UC San Diego at the Walter Pyramid.

Everything was clicking for the Beach (16-3, 5-1 Big West) as they hit a season-high .554, while putting up 15.0 total team blocks which kept the Tritons (7-14, 1-6 Big West) off balance all night. UCSD was stymied offensively, hitting -.038 over three sets. Meanwhile they were held to just 1.0 team block at the net as Long Beach State dominated each set, never allowing UC San Diego to score more than 17 points in a single frame.

Junior setter Aidan Knipe was phenomenal as he led the Beach to their 12th match of the year in which they hit over .300. The contest is also the third time LBSU has hit over .500 on the season. Knipe finished the match with 24 assists as he distributed the ball well with each of his hitters hitting .333 or higher.

Sotiris Siapanis led the way with eight kills on a .667 attack percentage (8-0-12), while Simon Torwie and Clarke Godbold each recorded seven kills. Godbold's seven kills came on 11 errorless swings as he hit .636, meanwhile Torwie hit .600 (7-1-10).

Shane Holdaway led the team with a .750 clip as he contributed six kills on eight swings without committing an error. Rounding out the Beach's offensive attack was Spencer Olivier who hit .333 with five kills.

The Long Beach State defense was equally as impressive. Olivier patrolled the net with a career-high eight blocks, while Holdaway added seven to match his career-best. Torwie, the nation's leading blocker, posted six blocks, while Siapanis and Godbold added three each.

In addition to leading LBSU at the net, Olivier also led the Beach in the backrow with a season-high eight digs and 10 perfect receptions. Knipe added five digs, while Siapanis collected four, and junior libero Mason Briggs logged three.

The Beach came out swinging as they hit an impressive .480 in the opening set knocking down 14 kills on 25 attempts, while committing just two attack errors. Siapanis got the serve to start the match and led Long Beach on a 4-0 serving run. The Beach never trailed in the set as they rolled to a 10-point (25-15) win. In the first set, Knipe dished out nine assists, while Siapanis logged five kills, and Olivier put up four blocks.

Long Beach State's offensive attack only got better in the second set as they registered 10 kills on 14 errorless attacks for a sizzling .714 hitting percentage. The Beach took an early 5-2 edge over the Tritons, before extending their lead to seven (18-11). LBSU scored three-straight points to push it to set point, 24-16, before winning on a kill from Olivier, 25-17.

In the third set, Long Beach State hit .529 (9-0-17) as they, once again, did not commit an attack error in the frame. Additionally, the Beach owned a sideout percentage of 84%, as they never trailed in the set. The Beach opened the game with a 4-0 lead and never looked back. LBSU used a 5-0 run, highlighted by an ace from Olivier, to take a 13-4 advantage. From there, the Beach opened up a double-digit lead (20-10) on a triple block from Torwie, Godbold, and Olivier, before cruising to a 25-13 victory to complete the sweep.

UC San Diego's Josh Schellinger led the team with 10 kills on a .250 attack percentage. Gabriel Dyer finished the match with 24 assists and six digs.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, April 7 at CSUN for a 7 p.m. match.
