11/25/2023 7:53:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

The Beach started off strong, but fell behind the Rainbow Wahine and were unable to recover

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The inaugural Outrigger Big West Women's Volleyball Championship came to a close on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid as No. 4 seed Long Beach State dropped a 3-0 [24-26, 15-25, 10-25] to No. 2 seed Hawaii.

The Beach (21-10) are still hopeful for a postseason at-large bid and will find out their fate in Sunday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. in the Selection Show, which will be televised on ESPN and ESPN+.

The Rainbow Wahine (23-8), meanwhile, punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament as The Big West's automatic bid.

Long Beach State opened the match strong as the Beach jumped out to a 6-5 lead after back-to-back kills from Hanna Lesiak and Kameron Bacon. The Bows battled back and took a 14-10 edge over LBSU as the Beach called a timeout. From there, Long Beach closed the gap and pulled within two (16-14). The Beach continued to stay competitive as they forced Hawaii to call a timeout after whittling their lead back down to two (22-20). Back-to-back kills from Elise Agi and Tia Chavira made it a one-point game (24-23) before the Beach took advantage of a Hawaii attack error to even the score at 24-all. Despite the Beach's pressure, Hawaii managed to come away with the win 26-24.

The second set saw four early ties as the game was close to start. However, Hawaii found their groove and went on a 6-1 run to break the game open (20-14). From there, the Bows controlled the set and cruised to a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 lead into the third set.

Hawaii took the momentum from the second set into the third and opened the frame on a 7-0 run. The Bows were up 9-1 as Long Beach State utilized their second timeout. The Beach struggled to find their footing and the Bows took full advantage opening up a double-digit lead (15-5) on a kill from Kendra Ham. From there, Hawaii went on to complete the sweep taking the third set, 25-10.

Elise Agi led the Beach with eight kills, while Lesiak, Natalie Glenn, and Kameron Bacon chipped in five kills each. Bacon's five kills came on 10 swings, with just one error as she led the team hitting .400.

Redshirt sophomore setter Zayna Meyer concluded the match with 23 assists, three digs, two kills, and one block.

Defensively, Jenna Giambi came off the bench and logged six digs, while Katie Kennedy and Agi each put up two blocks.

Hawaii's Amber Igiede was the only player on either team to reach double-figures as she finished the match with 16 kills on a .522 clip (16-4-23). She also led the Bows at the net with five blocks, while adding two aces. Kate Lang paced the Bows' offense to a .330 attack percentage as she dished out 36 assists. Caylen Alexander logged 10 digs, while libero Tayli Ikenaga added nine.
