Brandon Hyde is in his fifth season as the manager of the Baltimore Orioles, Hampson makes the postseason with a second team and Longoria makes his sixth postseason appearance with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Three former Long Beach State Dirtbags will participate in the 2023 postseason, as Evan Longoria makes his sixth postseason appearance in 2023, Garrett Hampson heads to the Wild Card with the Miami Marlins while Brandon Hyde is the first former Long Beach State player to reach the postseason as a MLB manager.
Baltimore has snapped a nine-year playoff drought under the leadership of Brandon Hyde, as the Orioles stunned preseason prognostications by winning over 100 games and clinching their first American League East title since 2014. Hyde was hired prior to the 2019 season and has overseen a complete rebuild of the Orioles during his tenure.
A true MLB legend, Longoria meanwhile will make his sixth postseason appearance while playing in his 16th season in the show. The three-time All-Star and multiple gold-glove winning infielder is playing with his third team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and has provided a steady veteran presence in 72 games with nine doubles and 11 home runs on the season.
Garrett Hampson hit .275 in 98 games in his first season with Miami, and makes his second postseason appearance with the Marlins after signing with the Florida club in the offseason.
Clayton Andrews made three appearances for the National League Central champion Milwaukee Brewers and was active as late as the final days of the season, but was not selected for the postseason roster for the first round of the postseason. He remains on the 40-man roster for the Brewers and is still eligible for selection should the Brewers advance out of the Wild Card.
Arizona will face off against those Brewers for the right to move on to the NLDS. Game one of the three-game series is set for 4 p.m., October 3. The Marlins open up the wild card on the third as well, playing in Philadelphia against the Phillies.
Baltimore, with the best record in the American League, will face one of the Wild Card winners starting on Saturday, October 7.
