Medik, Becirovic Novak Pick Up Wins On Tough Day 1 Of The ITA Southwest Regionals

Long Beach State earned a pair of opening round victories during the competitive first day at the ITA Southwest Regionals
SAN DIEGO – Long Beach State went up against some of the top competition in the region at the ITA Southwest Regionals and earned two victories on the first day of the tournament. The Beach look to improve on the second day of action, which begins with doubles at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.
"Tough first day for us, but the good news is that tomorrow is a new day," said Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "Looking to start strong with doubles and rebuild."
On the first day of singles action, Sarah Medik led the way as she earned a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Amanda Perez of UC Irvine. With the win, Medik advanced to the Round of 64 and played later that day against Arizona's Midori Castillo. Castillo would go on to defeat Medik, 7-6, 6-2.
Hana Becirovic Novak picked up the other LBSU win on the first day of the tournament. She faced UC Irvine's Cydney Yamamoto and came away with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Becirovic Novak went on to the Round of 64 where she went head-to-head with Zoe Olmos of San Diego State. Despite her efforts, Becirovic Novak came up on the wrong side of a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Peppi Ramstedt, Rhona Cook, and Doga Akyurek each suffered three-set losses. But are looking to bounce back tomorrow.
Ramstedt fell to Cal State Fullerton's Natalie Duffy, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, while Cook dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 contest to the Titans' Mariia Nikitash, and Akyurek came up short to UC Santa Barbara's Lucy Lu, 6-7, 6-0, 7-6.
In other singles action, Paulina Franco Martinessi lost to Grand Canyon's Iva Sepa, 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, Gloria Alogo Piqueras defeated Mathilde Tranberg, 6-2, 6-0.
Rounding out the Beach performances on day one, Justine Dondonay battled, but came up just short against Cal State Fullerton's Josie Usereau, 7-6, 7-5.
