Cook, Becirovic Novak Advance to Semifinals On Day 2 Of The Cal Fall Tournament

Cook advances to the Semifinals in the Gold Singles Bracket, while Becirovic Novak moves on in the White Singles Bracket to lead Long Beach State
BERKELEY, Calif. – On the second day of action at the Cal Fall Tournament, Long Beach State had two players advance to the semifinals in their respective singles brackets. Senior Rhona Cook advanced in the Gold Singles Bracket, while sophomore Hana Becirovic Novak moved into the semis of the White Singles Bracket. They will play on Sunday, Oct. 1 with an opportunity to advance to the finals.
Cook picked up a pair of victories on Friday to move onto the Round of 16 and the Quarterfinals on Saturday. Her final win came in just before midnight on Friday night as she downed UC Santa Barbara's Carla Pacot 7-6, 7-6 to complete the long day of action and advance in the bracket.
Today, she kicked off the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over BYU's Madison Smith to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, she moved on by way of opponent withdraw due to an injury.
Becirovic Novak has been solid this tournament as she defeated UC Davis' Claire Galerkin 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 32. She then came back in the Round of 16 to win over Wiem Boubaker of Nevada by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In the Quarterfinals, Becirovic Novak gritted out another three-setter as she faced Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli. Becirovic Novak won the first set 6-2, before dropping the second 1-6. In the final set, she battled Wernli to an exciting 7-5 victory to advance to the Semifinals on Sunday.
In addition to Cook and Becirovic Novak's outstanding showings in their respective singles brackets, Long Beach State also got a strong performance in doubles from Becirovic Novak and senior Mathilde Tranberg. The duo made quick work of San Jose State's Jovana Babic and Olaya Bances Iglesias, 8-3, to advance to the Round of 16.
The final day of the Cal Fall Tournament will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1 with first serve slated for 9 a.m. Fans can watch all the action on the Hellman Tennis Courts on the live stream via CalBears.com.
