Marcus Tsohonis found a cutting Tone Hunter to seal the win in the final seconds.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Marcus Tsohonis scored seven of Long Beach State's final nine points and made the assist on the final basket as the Beach held off UC Davis 75-72 in a game that was tight throughout. With the win, Long Beach State extended their winning streak to four games.
Tsohonis, who missed Thursday's contest at Cal Poly following an injury that required stitches, returned for Long Beach State (12-10, 6-4 Big West) sporting a mask, and was the hero late for the Beach in a game that featured two evenly matched teams and two standout performances on each side.
For the Beach, Tsohonis finished with 21 points and four assists, while Lassina Traore recorded his fourth straight double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds as the Beach once again out-rebounded their opponent, but were matched by two big nights from Elijah Pepper and TY Johnson, who combined for 60 of the 72 UC Davis (13-9, 6-4 Big West) points.
Long Beach State took what was the largest lead of the game early in the first half at 16-10, but Pepper, who had 19 points in the first half, helped the Aggies pull even at 18-18. The Beach took the lead into the locker rooms however, on top 38-37 at the break.
The game featured 13 lead changes and 15 ties, many coming through the second half as the teams continued to battle back and forth. UC Davis took their largest lead of the game at 54-50 with just over 14 minutes remaining, but Aboubacar Traore answered with a putback to stop the run, and the Beach ultimately pulled back in front at 59-57 after Lassina's second breakaway steal and dunk of the contest.
Trailing 68-66 with under five minutes to play, the Beach turned to their most experienced Division I player in Tsohonis. Tsohonis tied the game, and then gave the Beach a four-point lead at 72-68 after midrange jumpers on two straight possessions with just over two minutes to play.
UC Davis was able to cut the lead to one at 73-72 on a TY Johnson jumper with 34 seconds to play, but Tsohonis found a cutting Tone Hunter on the back door to push the Beach out in front 75-72, and Johnson's last second try didn't find the mark as the Beach came away with the win.
Next week is rivalry week for Long Beach State, who will stay close to home playing at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, February 2 before a rematch of the Black and Blue Rivalry at home in the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, February 4. Both games will be shown live on ESPN+.
