LBSU begin their spring season obtaining seven victories in singles action.

LONG BEACH, Calif.- Beach Tennis opened play at the LBSU Winter Invitational on Friday, with a doubles victory and a stellar 7-1 singles record Friday afternoon. After non-competition play since November, the Beach start off dominant to begin the spring season.

"I was really pleased with our performance today," said Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "While some of our doubles scores may have not shown it, there were a lot of opportunities and strong play to build on. In singles we showed fight and determination which is why we took 7 of 8 matches. A very good start to our spring season."

In doubles action, Sophomore Peppi Ramstedt and Junior Rhona Cook gave LBSU their first victory of the day. In a tight match they defeated Rita Colyer and Chiho Mushika of San Francisco, with a score of 7-5.

In singles play, everyone was locked in to dominate. Everything the team experienced during the fall season benefited them to consistently improve and apply their teachings to this weekend's tournament.

In moments of adversity, Sarah Medik, Doga Akyurek, and Justine Dondonay displayed strong determination to come out on top in their singles matches. All three of their flights extended to decisive three sets which included a comeback victory from Akyurek in her second set being down 2-5. However, after two grueling flights from Medik and Akyurek they commanded their third set by defeating both their respective opponents, 6-1. During Dondonay's singles match she encountered a tough opponent. Dondonay obtained her victory in a keen match that resulted in 6-0, 6-7, 7-6. It was a back-and-forth match during the last two sets, but Dondonay stayed patient and kept her foot on the gas until she came out on top.

Continuing with singles action, Mathilde Tranberg defeated MiaAngelina Ruja of Pacific with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Rhona Cook finished off Tiger's Danielle Zamora, with a score of 6-4, 6-2. Getting into the fun as well, Hana Becirovic Novak defeated Alicia Yue in a thrilling three set flight, winning 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 while Sheena Masuda obtained her victory against Summer Qiu of Pacific, with a score of 6-4, 7-5.

The Beach set the tone for themselves, and they look forward to coming back tomorrow to continue building this momentum for the rest of the weekend.

Play is scheduled to resume on Saturday at 11 A.M., with doubles play followed by singles action.
