Long Beach Sweeps Notre Dame

Redshirt freshman Zayna Meyer leads the way with a double-double, her fifth in as many matches

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team never trailed as they rolled to a 3-0 [25-21, 25-23, 25-23] sweep over Notre Dame on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid. With the win, the Beach went 2-0 in the LBSU Tournament with wins over both Boise State and Notre Dame.
Zayna Meyer, the Beach's (4-1) redshirt freshman setter led the way as she recorded her fifth double-double in as many matches. Meyer led the Beach past the Fighting Irish (1-4) with 32 assists and 17 digs, while also contributing five blocks and four kills. Her four kills came on six swings as she hit .500 in the match.
Outside hitters Morgan Chacon and Natalie Glenn led the offensive attack with 10 kills each. Chacon narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs, while Glenn finished the contest with seven digs and two aces.
Senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz did a solid job in the backrow with 14 digs as she led the Beach defense. With Dela Cruz leading the charge, LBSU managed to keep Notre Dame off balance as the Fighting Irish were only able to muster a .071 attack percentage.
Meyer's five blocks at the net tied for the team lead with junior middle blocker Katie Kennedy, while Chacon and Callie Schwarzenbach each added one.
Long Beach State and Notre Dame played each other tough as the first set saw the two teams battle through five ties, before the Beach rattled of four-straight points to take a 12-8 lead. From there, LBSU never trailed. The Beach held the lead the rest of the way and cruised to a 25-21 win after a kill from Glenn.
The Beach took a quick 6-1 lead to start the second set and never let it go. Despite an early timeout from Notre Dame and the Irish pulling within one (6-5), Long Beach surged ahead and forced another Irish timeout at 12-6. The Beach called a couple of timeouts of their own with the Irish made it a two-point game (15-13 and 21-19), but LBSU managed to hold off Notre Dame and come away with a 25-23 win on another Glenn kill.
Leading two sets to none, Long Beach knocked down 15 kills in the third set and limited Notre Dame to a .029 attack percentage. The Beach jumped out in front to an 11-6 advantage and despite the Irish chipping away, never relinquished their lead. LBSU pushed it to match point and earned the sweep on a kill from Victoria O'Sullivan who would finish with seven kills.
Lucy Trump led the Fighting Irish with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Hattie Monson tallied 22 digs. Phyona Schrader was the team's setter as she concluded the night with 19 assists and nine digs.
Long Beach State hit the road this week as the Beach take on No. 2 Nebraska on the road on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on B1G+.
