Long Beach State Falls in Straight Sets to No. 2 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. –
The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team went head-to-head with No. 2 Nebraska and fell in straight sets, 3-0 [16-25, 22-25, 14-25] at the Bob Devaney Center on Saturday afternoon.

Long Beach State (4-2) played No. 2 Nebraska (7-0) point for point, but came up short in each of the three sets. Overall, the Huskers led the Beach in kills (44-26), assists (40-24), and digs (45-34). However, LBSU held the lead in blocks (8-7).

Leading the way for the Beach was sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn who finished the match with nine kills, eight digs, and two blocks. Redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon was the squad's second leading scorer with eight kills, while adding five digs, and one block. Victoria O'Sullivan had a solid showing as she finished hitting .308 with six kills.

Redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer paced the Beach with 19 assists, while adding eight blocks, four blocks, and one kill.

Defensively, senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz logged 11 digs to lead the Beach, while middle blockers Callie Schwarzenbach and Katie Kennedy posted three blocks each at the net.

Nebraska took an early 2-0 lead to start the match, but Long Beach was quick to counter as the Beach went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead. The Huskers evened the score at 5-5 marking the first of xx ties in the frame. However, the Huskers managed to close out the set on a 7-1 run en route to winning, 25-16.

The second set began much like the first, with both teams matching each other point-for-point. With both teams utilizing early runs, the contest remained close throughout. The Beach pulled within two (21-19) after a kill from Morgan Chacon, however, the Huskers would pull ahead push it to set point, 24-20, before closing out the second 25-22.

The Huskers started the third set with a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Nebraska never trailed, despite Long Beach State's efforts. The Huskers led the whole set as they came to a 25-18 win to complete the sweep.

Whitney Lauenstein led the Huskers in scoring with 12 kill on a .381 attack percentage, while also putting up four blocks. At setter, Anni Evans (17 assists) and Nicklin Hames (15 assists) shared time distributing the ball, while Lexi Rodriguez finished the contest with 15 digs.

Long Beach State will be back in action playing Loyola Marymount on Friday and Saturday. The Beach and the Lions will face off at LMU on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., before playing at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
