Long Beach State Drops 3-1 Decision to Loyola Marymount on the Road

Three players scored in double-figures as Morgan Chacon led the way with 19 kills in the setback

LOS ANGELES – It was a battle at Gersten Pavilion on Friday night and Long Beach State came up just short against Loyola Marymount in a four set contest with set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 26-28, 23-25.
The Beach (4-3) and the Lions (5-3) played each other in a pretty evenly matched contest that saw the two teams battle each other through 44 ties and 17 lead changes.
Despite the loss, LBSU led LMU in kills (55-52), service aces (5-4) and blocks (11.5-9.0). The Lions out-hit the Beach, .214 to .197, and also held the advantage in assists (50-49) and digs (45-42).
Redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer distributed 42 assists and led the Beach to a hitting percentage of .197. She did a good job of setting her hitters as Morgan Chacon (19 kills), Natalie Glenn (12 kills), and Katie Kennedy (10 kills) all reached double-digits.
In addition to spreading the ball around, Meyer also contributed on the defensive end as she led the team in blocks with six, and added eight digs.
Senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz led the backcourt with 10 digs marking her seventh double-digit showing in as many matches.
Coming in behind Meyer at the net were Callie Schwarzenbach with five blocks and Kennedy with four. Kennedy turned in a solid performance as well, hitting a season-high .412 (10-3-17).
Sophomore defensive specialist Savana Chacon led the squad at the service line as she finished the match with three aces, while also posting eight digs.
The Beach started the match strong as they hit .357 and knocked down 14 kills in the first set. While LBSU was playing well, so was LMU as the Lions posted a .323 clip and collected 15 kills. In the opening set alone, the two teams exchanged leads six times and fought through 13 ties, The closely contested game saw the Beach reach set point first, 24-23, but ultimately, LMU was able to close the set with three straight points to win, 26-24.
Long Beach began the second set up 3-0 and despite five early ties, never trailed. The Beach held the lead the whole set as they hit .312 and limited the Lions to a .200 attack percentage. With everything clicking for the Beach, LBSU closed out the frame with a 25-21 win to even the match at one set apiece.
The Beach and the Lions played two more very evenly matched sets which both saw 13 ties. The third set went to overtime and Long Beach State came out on the wrong end falling, 28-26. The fourth set was very similar to the third and ended with LMU winning, 25-23 to close out the set and match.
Loyola Marymount was led by Kari Geissberger's 14 kills on a .355 attack percentage. Isabella Burns finished the match with 45 assists and nine digs, while libero Mary Shroll posted 13 digs, and Phoebe Awoleye put up five blcoks.
Long Beach State and LMU will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
