Long Beach State Wins a 3-2 Battle Against Loyola Marymount

LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount played each other for the second time in as many nights and the Beach pulled out a hard-fought 3-2 {16-25, 25-21, 11-25, 25-16, 15-11] victory at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday to split the series with the Lions.

LBSU (5-3) got off to a slow start against LMU (5-4), but came to life in the final two sets hitting over .300 in the fourth and over .400 in the fifth to earn the victory.

Junior opposite Katie Kennedy had a season-high 14-kill performance as she hit .500 (14-2-24) in the contest. Also recording double-figures was redshirt junior Morgan Chacon who finished the night with 13 kills to go along with 13 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer also posted a double-double, her sixth of the season, with 36 assists and 14 digs.

In the backrow, senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz was solid as she logged 21 digs marking her third 20-plus dig performance of the season.

On blocking defense, Kennedy led the way with eight blocks, while senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach added seven.

The Beach held the lead over the Lions in blocks (13.0-12.0) as well as digs (70-68), however LMU had the advantage in kills (58-49), assists (56-43), and aces (6-3).
 

Both teams started the match trading points early. However, LMU broke the game open with a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead over the Beach. From there, the Lions remained in control and took the first set, 25-16.

The Beach evened the match at one set apiece in the second set as they used a 7-1 run to take a 19-12 lead over the Lions. With the momentum going Long Beach's way, LBSU surged ahead and put the game away on a kill from Kennedy, 25-21.

LMU found their footing again in the third set as the started the frame with a 6-2 edge. The Lions continued to build on their lead and got a solid serving run from Rose Booth to end the set on an 8-0, securing a 25-11 win over the Beach.

Despite the tough loss in the third set, Long Beach State would not back down. The Beach came out in fourth set and hit .314 in the frame and knocked down 15 kills to win the set and fourth a fifth game. With the offense going strong, the defense stepped up as well and held the Lions to a .105 attack percentage. Long Beach used five separate 3-0 runs to cruise ahead and take a 22-13 lead over Loyola Marymount, before winning the set, 25-16, on a kill from Kameron Bacon.

The fifth set began close with the two teams trading points back and fourth. After playing each other through six ties, the Beach got a kill from Morgan Chacon which jumpstarted a 4-0 run that put LBSU up 10-6 forcing an LMU timeout. The Beach would hold the lead the rest of the way, winning 15-11, on a kill from Morgan Chacon.
 

LMU had four double-digit scorers led by Audrey Klemp's 17 kills on a .303 clip. Kari Geissberger, Booth, and Jacquelyn Moore each finished with 12 kills. Isabella Bareford posted a double-double with 54 assists and 14 digs, while Sam Hastings led the defensive effort with 21 digs in the back row. At the net, Geisserberger and Moore each put up seven blocks.

Long Beach State will open up Big West action next week as they travel to Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. contest, before taking on CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
