SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –
Long Beach State opened Big West Conference action and played a tough match at Cal Poly, but ultimately fell, 3-1 [20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 20-25] at the Mott Athletics Center on Friday night.

The Beach (5-4, 0-1 Big West) served up a season-high 12 aces as Morgan Chacon contributed to half of that output as she tied her career-high with six. Despite, the 12-ace showing, LBSU was out-hit by Cal Poly (4-7, 1-0 Big West) .232 to .184. The Mustangs also led the Beach in kills (49-48), assists (44-43), digs (60-45), and blocks (9.0-7.0).



Redshirt Jaylen Jordan led the Beach offensively with a career-high 13 kills on a .267 attack percentage. Jordan was an asset to Long Beach off the bench as she also logged eight digs on defense in a solid all-around performance.

In addition to her half-dozen aces, Morgan Chacon also recorded double-figure kills with 10, marking her eighth such match of the season. She also contributed four digs, and one block.

Zayna Meyer distributed the ball well for Long Beach State as she collected 39 assists, while also adding four digs, two aces, one block, and one kill.

Defensively, senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz recorded her ninth double-digit dig performance of the season as she finished the match with 10. At the net, senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach put up six blocks.

Despite hitting .238 with 15 kills in the first set, the Beach came up short to Cal Poly as the Mustangs finished the game with 16 kills on a .429 attack percentage. The game started close, but the hosts used a 5-0 run to take a 12-9 lead over the Beach forcing an LBSU timeout. That run gave the Mustangs a lead it would not relinquish as Cal Poly claimed the first set, 25-20.

The Beach took an early 6-2 lead after tallying off five-straight points highlighted by back-to-back aces from Morgan Chacon. Long Beach then sent Kailia Lopez to the service line and she led the Beach on another 5-0 run as LBSU took an 11-6 lead. The Beach extended their led to seven (18-11) as they surged ahead. Dela Cruz finished the set for the Beach with a game-winning ace, 25-16, as LBSU evened the match at 1-1.

The third set saw the two conference foes battle each other through 10 ties, six lead changes, and several scoring runs. With the set tied 22-all, Cal Poly sent it to set point on an ace by Emme Bullis before winning the frame, 25-23 on a kill from Maia Dvoracek.

Cal Poly controlled the fourth set as the Mustangs never trailed after starting the set on a 5-0 run. Long Beach State scored four-straight points, but Cal Poly countered with a 4-0 run of their own to take an 11-6 advantage. The Beach managed to cut the lead down to two on several occasions, but the Mustangs pushed back out in front and eventually won, 25-20.

Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs with 19 kills on a .357 attack percentage, while adding eight digs, and two blocks. Dvoracek finished with 16 kills on a .222 clip to go along with 14 digs for a double-double. Bullis also recorded a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs. Meredith Phillips led the team at the net with six blocks.

Long Beach State heads to CSU Bakersfield for a contest against the Roadrunners on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
