LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State took down rival Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in a big matchup at George Allen Field on Thursday night. The victory moves the Beach (3-4-4, 2-0-1 Big West) into first place atop the conference standings.
After a quick two shots from the Titans got the action started early, the Beach responded with the first goal of the night in the 11tha minute. After a free kick was cleared, Aimee Medwin charged in from the backline and lobbed it to a wide open Lena Silano at the edge of the box near the baseline. From there, Silano chipped into the middle for a Sophie Jones header into the lower left corner for the score.
It goes as the first goal of Jones' collegiate career as she becomes the eighth different goal scorer for the Beach this season.
In the 34tha minute, Long Beach State had a free kick from about 30 yards out. As Maddy Perez chipped it into the box, Silano was knocked down from behind drawing a foul and giving her a penalty kick. With the keeper going right, the senior went low left for her eighth goal of the season giving the Beach a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Things got chippy in the second half as both teams combined for three yellow cards and 14 total fouls, but it remained a two-goal match as they battled back-and-forth.
Fullerton would break the shutout with a header goal from Emelia Owen in the 73rd minute to make it 2-1. However, the Beach responded with an attack that saw three shots on goal in the final 15 minutes as they held on for the rivalry game victory.
It marks back-to-back victories for the first time this season for the black and gold as they remain unbeaten in conference play heading into their first road matchup of the Big West schedule.
They will take on another unbeaten opponent as the Beach travels to the islands for a Sunday matchup with the Rainbow Wahine.
