Beach Women’s Volleyball Defeats Boise State, 3-1, in Home Opener

Morgan Chacon logged another 20-kill performance, while Savana Chacon posted a career-high 17 digs, and Natalie Glenn and Zayna Meyer both finished with double-doubles

LONG BEACH, Calif. – More than 1,400 Beach fans filled the Walter Pyramid to get a glimpse at the 2022 Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team in their home opener and the squad did not disappoint. The Beach earned a 3-1 [21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18] victory over Boise State on Thursday night as several players recorded double-doubles and career-highs.
The Beach (3-1) hit .229 in the contest and limited the Broncos (2-1) to a .113 attack percentage on the night. Long Beach held the advantage over Boise State in kills (58-42), assists (57-40), and digs (73-60), however the Broncos out-blocked the Beach, 12.0 to 9.0. Both teams finished the match with five aces apiece.
For the fourth time in as many matches, redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer recorded a double-double as she posted 44 assists and 12 digs. She also added six kills, four blocks, and an ace as she led the Long Beach State offense. Meyer did a good job distributing the ball to her hitters as redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon posted another 20-kill showing as she concluded the match with 21 kills on a .333 attack percentage. Also recording a double-double for the Beach was sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn who notched 11 kills and 14 digs.
Long Beach State shined on the defensive end as four Beach players reached double-digit digs. Leading the way in the backrow was senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz who tallied 19 digs. She was one assist away from a double-double as she finished with nine helpers. Savana Chacon recorded a career-high 17 digs for the Beach, while adding three aces, and two assists. Glenn posted 14 digs, while Meyer added 12 to round out the quartet of double-digit performers.
After dropping the first set, 25-21, Long Beach State came back won the next three sets. The Beach and the Broncos played each other point-for-point in the second set as they battled through 11 ties and four lead changes. LBSU strung together three-straight points to take an 18-14 lead forcing a Boise State timeout. The Broncos closed the gap and evened the score, 21-21. Callie Schwarzenbach gave the Beach the lead as she knocked down a kill from the middle (22-21) and Savana Chacon put the game away with an ace to win it, 25-22.
With the match even at one set apiece, Long Beach State got into a groove and hit .229 in the third set, while forcing the Broncos into a negative attack percentage (-.036). The Beach defense was on point as they kept the Broncos off balance, meanwhile the LBSU offense capitalized. The Beach used a 5-1 run to take a 13-10 lead that they would not relinquish as they cruised to a 25-19 victory.
Long Beach State put the match away with a strong fourth set showing as they hit .417 and knocked down 18 kills. Morgan Chacon was on fire as she finished the frame with seven kills on 11 errorless swings en route to hitting a whopping .636. With everything clicking for the Beach, the hosts rolled to a 25-18 win handing Boise State their first loss of the season.
Boise State's Paige Bartsch led the team with a double-double as she concluded the match with 15 kills and 17 digs, but only managed to hit .065. Lauren Ohlinger also recorded double-figures with 13 kills, while setter Ashley Hayden dished out 35 assists, and libero Allison Casillas posted 14 digs. At the net, Annie Kaminski finished with a team-high six blocks, while Chey Day added five.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host Notre Dame at the Walter Pyramid at 7 p.m.
