Long Beach State Battles, But Falls in Five to No. 19 Oregon

Morgan Chacon has a career day with 26 kills on a .318 hitting percentage for the Beach

PORTLAND, Ore. – Long Beach State was put to the test on Saturday at Viking Pavilion as they faced off against No. 19 Oregon and took the Ducks to five sets [23-25, 25-20, 20-25, 27-25, 16-18] but came up just short in a hard-fought battle.
The Beach (2-1) outhit the Ducks (1-0) .270 to .258 and held the advantage in blocks (12.0 to 8.0), but Oregon led in kills, assists, digs, and aces.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon had a career showing on Saturday as she knocked down 26 kills on a .318 attack percentage. She also added eight digs and four blocks in an all-around solid performance.
Senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach also had a stellar performance as she tallied 10 kills on 16 errorless swings to hit. 625 in the match. Additionally, she posted a team-best six blocks.
Redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer led the Beach offense with 50 assists to go along with 14 digs, five kills, three blocks, and two aces. Meyer has now recorded three double-doubles in as many matches.
Senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz was once again solid in the backcourt as she picked up 18 digs to pace the defensive efforts.
Getting the start in the middle, sophomore Kameron Bacon finished the match with five blocks, while adding seven kills on a .412 attack percentage.
The match between the Beach and the Ducks was a battle from the beginning as the two teams exchanged leads 13 times and fought each other through 41 ties throughout the five-set contest.
Oregon kicked off the match with a 6-1 lead, but Long Beach would chip away and eventually tie the game at 10-10 on a kill from Bacon. Meyer then served up an ace to give LSBU its first lead of the match (12-11). Oregon went back out in front and after going back and forth, the Ducks managed to pull out a 25-23 set one win.
After a few early ties in the second set, Long Beach State got into its groove and took a 10-6 lead on a kill from Morgan Chacon. The Beach never trailed the rest of the way as they extended their lead to five (20-15) forcing an Oregon timeout before taking the second set, 25-20.
With the match tied at one set apiece, the Beach took a quick lead in set three (8-5) before the Ducks used a 4-0 run to go up 18-15 and force a Long Beach timeout. From there, the Ducks led the rest of the way and put the game away, 25-20, to take a 2-1 set lead.
The fourth set was another battle that went back and forth with 12 ties and five lead changes. The Beach went on a 3-0 run highlighted by Jaylen Jordan's ace serve which evened the score at 9-9. However, the Ducks used a 5-1 run of their own to turn the tables and take a 14-10 lead over LBSU. Oregon pulled away with a 17-13 lead, but Long Beach wasn't done yet. The Beach went on a 5-1 run to even things up and Morgan Chacon knocked down her 20th kill of the match to put the Beach on top, 21-20. The two teams continued to trade points into overtime, but Long Beach came out victorious, 27-25, to force a fifth set.
The fifth set was much like the fourth as the two teams battled each other through a whopping 12 ties. Neither team led by more than two points throughout and the Beach held the lead (8-7) at the switch. From there, LBSU took an 11-9 lead on a block from Meyer and Schwarzenbach. But once again, the Ducks clawed their way back and evened things up at 11-apieve. Long Beach sent it to match point on a kill from Morgan Chacon, but the Beach were unable to convert the final point. The two teams continued to trade points until Oregon managed to string two together and take the match 18-16.
Oregon was led by Brooke Nuneviller who finished with a double-double of 28 kills and 12 digs. Setter Hannah Pukis also posted a double-double with 44 assists and 13 digs.
Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid to host Boise State in the home opener on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
