PORTLAND, Ore. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team kicked off the 2022 season with an exciting come-from-behind victory over Oregon State, 3-2 [18-25, 22-25, 25-17, 28-26, 15-11], at the Portland State Tournament on Friday afternoon.
After dropping the first two sets to Oregon State (0-1), Long Beach State (1-0) strung together three wins for the reverse sweep as the Beach notched the first win in the Tyler Hildebrand Era.
The Beach were led offensively by redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon and redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer who each had a double-double. Chacon finished the match with a team-leading 18 kills and 10 digs, while Meyer set the tone with 42 assists and 18 digs.
Also recording double-figures for the Beach were sophomore outside hitter Natalie Glenn (12 kills) and junior middle blocker Katie Kennedy (11 kills).
The Long Beach State defense was solid as senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz paced the backrow with a career-high 24 digs. Meanwhile, senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach led the squad at the net with five blocks, while Kennedy and sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon each added four.
Sophomore defensive specialist Savana Chacon came off the bench and made an immediate impact picking up eight digs and leading the Beach with three service aces. LBSU finished the contest with eight aces as Dela Cruz and Glenn added a pair each, while Morgan Chacon chipped in one.
The Beach took a moment to warm up as Oregon State out hit them .400 to .182 in the first set as the Beavers won the opening frame, 25-18. Long Beach State made it a closer game in the second set, but still came up just short as the Beach fell by a score of 25-22.
Down two sets to none, Long Beach State turned in a gritty performance in the third set as the Beach jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. LBSU led 7-1 as Oregon State called for a timeout. The break in action did little to stop the Beach as they closed the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-17.
LBSU fell behind early in the fourth set, 4-0, but would not quit. The Beach showed their determination as they were down by as many as seven (20-13), but chipped away and made it a four-point game (21-17) forcing an Oregon State timeout. Long Beach State went on a 5-1 run highlighted by an ace from Savana Chacon, before closing the set on a 3-0 run to win 28-26 and force a fifth set.
Still riding the momentum from their comeback win in the fourth set, the Beach jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the fifth set. By the side switch, Long Beach State was up 8-1, and the match looked like it belonged to the Beach. However, Oregon State rattled off three straight points to cut the Beach's lead in half (8-4) before closing the gap and making it a two-point (9-7) game. The Beach went back out in front by four (11-7), but the Beavers stayed within striking distance as the score moved to 12-10 in favor of the Beach. LBSU sent it to match point on a block by Kennedy and Bacon, then Bacon gave the Beach the set and match with a kill.
Oregon State's Vivian Light led all scorers with 23 kills and 11 digs, while Kateryna Tkachenko also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Setter Inna Balyko finished the match with a double-double as well (39 assists, 12 digs), while Mychael Vernon paced the backrow with 15 digs.
Long Beach State will be back in action tonight at 6 p.m. at the Portland State Tournament as the Beach face the host Vikings. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
