Long Beach State Downs Portland State, 3-1

Dylan Dela Cruz logs 20 digs, while Morgan Chacon and Zayna Meyer record double-doubles in the win

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team opened the first day of the 2022 season with a pair of victories as the Beach closed out the day with a 3-1 [25-27, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20] win over Portland State on Friday night. It is the first time since 2015 that Long Beach State has opened the season with back-to-back victories.
The Beach (2-0) turned in a solid blocking defense performance as they posted 13.5 total team blocks to Portland State's (0-1) 5.0. LBSU was led at the net by junior middle blocker Katie Kennedy who tied her career-high with eight blocks, while redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer added six, and senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach contributed five.
Meyer did a good job distributing the ball as she dished out 44 assists to go along with 15 digs and three aces for her second double-double of the day. She found redshirt junior outside hitter Morgan Chacon who converted 16 kills, while adding 13 digs and three blocks as she also registered her second double-double of the day.
Joining Chacon in double-figure kills was redshirt freshman outside hitter Jaylen Jordan who finished the match with 10 kills, nine digs, and four blocks.
In the backrow, senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz was steady as she collected 20 digs marking her second 20-dig performance of the day. She led a quartet of players in double-digits as Meyer added 15, while Morgan Chacon and her sister Savana Chacon each tallied 13. Savana Chacon also served up a pair of aces to help the Beach on serve receive.
The contest between the Beach and the Vikings was a battle throughout as the two teams fought each other through 28 ties and 14 lead changes. Additionally, the opening set went into overtime before Portland State managed to pull out a 27-25 win.
Long Beach State's defense limited Portland State to a mere .093 attack percentage in the second set as that allowed the Beach offense to capitalize. LBSU used a 5-0 run highlighted by a kill from Victoria O'Sullivan to take a 12-9 lead. After Portland State managed to tie the game up, the Beach jumped out in front again 17-13. A kill from Kennedy forced a Portland State timeout as the Beach led 19-14 before pushing the game to set point, 24-17. The Vikings tallied four-straight points before Schwarzenbach put the game away for Long Beach, 25-21.
After a close start in the third set, Long Beach State used a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 advantage over Portland State. From there, the Beach held the led the rest of the way extending their lead to as many as six (20-14) before Morgan Chacon gave the Beach a 25-20 win.
Leading two sets to one, LBSU came out firing in the fourth set as the Beach jumped out to a 5-1 lead. However, a 5-0 Portland State run would put the Vikings up 8-7. Long Beach State showed what it is made of and used a 4-0 run followed by a 3-0 run to take a 19-12 lead over Portland State as the Beach held a comfortable lead over the Vikings the rest of the way before Morgan Chacon knocked down the final kill of the match to give the Beach the 25-20 win.
Portland State's Makayla Lewis led all scorers with 20 kills to go along with 10 digs for a double-double. Setter Madison Friebel also registered a double-double with 30 assists and 14 digs. Parker Webb finished the match with 10 kills, while Ellie Snook led the defense with 17 digs.
Long Beach State will close out the tournament against No. 19 Oregon on Saturday, August. 27 at 2 p.m. at Viking Pavilion.
