
Former Long Beach State Swimming Coach Dick Jochums Passes At 81

Jochums led the Long Beach State Swimming and Diving program from 1971-78 as part of a storied career.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – International Swimming Hall of Fame member and former Long Beach State swimming and diving head coach Dick Jochums died last Friday at the age of 81.
Jochums had a hand in developing some of the best American swimmers from the 1960s into the 2000s. He placed a swimmer on every American delegation for a major international event from 1968 to 2006, with the lone exception of the 1996 Olympics. He coached swimmers who set 25 world records, won 12 Olympic medals (two golds) and was part of eight U.S. national teams as an assistant or head coach.
Starting his coaching career as an assistant at Washington and Cal, Jochums took over from Don Gambril as the head coach of the swimming and diving program at the Beach, ultimately leading the program to four straight conference championships from 1975-78 and a trio of NCAA appearances.
Jochums is a member of multiple Hall of Fames including the American Swimming Coaches Association and the Aquatic Capital Hall of Fame in addition to the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
