Long Beach State Played Pepperdine to a Four Set Tie in Exhibition Contest

Katie Kennedy led the Beach with 10 kills and six blocks in the Beach’s lone exhibition match of the year

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach fans were able to get a first glimpse of the 2022 Beach Women's Volleyball team on Saturday afternoon as they played Pepperdine to a 2-2 [25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25] tie in an exhibition match at the Walter Pyramid.
Nearly 1,000 fans watched as Long Beach State out hit Pepperdine .216 to .133 over four sets. The Beach and the Waves were equally matched throughout as they battled through 22 ties and 10 lead changes. LBSU took sets one and three, and Pepperdine took the second and fourth sets.
First year head coach Tyler Hildebrand utilized 17 players over four sets as almost all of the Beach saw action on the court.
Junior Katie Kennedy got the start at middle blocker and led the way with 10 kills on a .294 hitting percentage. She also posted six total blocks (two solo stops and four block assists). Joining Kennedy with strong offensive showings were redshirt junior Morgan Chacon and redshirt freshman Jaylen Jordan. Both played outside and finished the match with nine kills apiece.
Redshirt freshman Zayna Meyer got the start at setter and distributed 33 assists over three sets. She also added three digs, three kills, one solo block, and an ace in an all-around solid performance.
Defensively, Long Beach State posted 13.0 total team blocks and 54 digs. At the net, sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon posted four blocks, while senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach added three.
In the back row, senior Dylan Dela Cruz got the start at libero and collected 16 digs in three sets. In the third and fourth sets, Savana Chacon earned the start at libero and finished the match with 10 digs over four sets of action.
Long Beach State and Pepperdine went back and forth in the first set as the two teams exchanged leads seven times before the Beach pulled away. LBSU hit .281 in the frame and earned a 25-19 win to go up 1-0.
Pepperdine's strongest performance came in the second set as the Waves hit .355 and knocked down 13 kills as they defeated the Beach, 25-19.
Tied at one set apiece, Long Beach State shutdown Pepperdine in the third set forcing the Waves into a negative attack percentage (-.057). The Beach capitalized on Pepperdine's woes and knocked down 11 kills in the set en route to winning 25-18.
The Waves managed to tie the match at 2-2 with a fourth set victory over the Beach, 25-23.
Long Beach State will officially open the 2022 campaign on Friday, August 26 at the Portland State Tournament. The Beach's home opener is set for Thursday, September 1 against Boise State at 7 p.m.
