Senior Lena Silano scored the only goal of the night in the 25th minute.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's soccer team began their fall season with a 1-0 victory over California Baptist in an exhibition game on Wednesday night. Lena Silano picked up where she left off last year, scoring the lone goal of the night.
In the 25th minute, Silano fought off a defender to create space at the top of the box sending a strike at the lower left corner. Her shot beat the diving Lancer goalkeeper to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.
Morgan Houston-Shepherd recorded a pair of saves in the first half as she and the Beach defense held the Lancers scoreless into halftime.
Going into the second half, Zora Standifer took over in net and was impressive. The first of her three saves came in the 52nd minute with a diving save to her left on a shot through the middle of the box.
After a lot of back-and-forth between both sides, the Lancers found themselves in a three-on-one breakaway with just over three minutes to play. The CBU shot from the near side of the box went toward far post, but Standifer fully extended to make yet another tremendous diving save.
The save secured Long Beach State's 1-0 victory.
Long Beach State will take on Arizona State in another exhibition game this Saturday. Kickoff in Phoenix is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
