Long Beach State is the first winner of the newly renamed Dennis Farrell Big West Commissioner’s Cup, awarded to the most successful athletic department in the conference each season.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Big West Conference announced on Sunday that Long Beach State has once again taken the top spot and was awarded the Dennis Farrell Big West Commissioner's Cup, presented to the Big West athletics department that has the most consistent success throughout each season.

Long Beach State finished with the highest tally of average points in the 22 years the Cup has been awarded, and is just the second program to reach 140 points, joining the 2011-12 iteration of Long Beach State athletics.

LBSU also continued the standard for excellence in the award, winning the Big West Commissioner's Cup for the ninth time since the cup was first presented in 1998-99. Only four programs have ever claimed the Commissioner's cup, with Long Beach State winning nine times.

Points for the award are given based on the regular season league standings, and the Beach had a tremendous year. Three programs, Men's Basketball, Men's Volleyball, and Women's Track and Field claimed conference championships in 2021-22. Three other programs in Softball, Men's Golf and Men's Track and Field also finished in second place to help pace the program to victory.

"We are proud to win our ninth Big West Commissioner's Cup," Long Beach State Executive Director of Athletics Andy Fee said. "The Commissioner's Cup is always a top goal for our athletics department and it is a direct result of the amazing talent, grit, and competitiveness of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff, and campus administration led by President Jane Close Conoley.

"It is an even higher honor to win this trophy now named for former Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell. We will celebrate this incredible accomplishment and I am confident we will continue to raise the bar and strive for excellence in the future."

The Big West Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the conference staff to name the Big West Commissioner's Cup in honor of Dennis Farrell, who served as Big West Commissioner for 28 years before his retirement in 2020.

"Our membership has nothing but the highest regard for Dennis Farrell, who gave 40 years of meritorious service to The Big West in various roles." Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly noted. "The Commissioner's Cup was conceived under his leadership, and it is with tremendous respect that The Big West's award for broad-based competitive excellence now bears his name."

"The Commissioner's Cup is the top award The Big West provides for competitive excellence by a member institution, and I am humbled to be honored by The Big West membership in this way," Dennis Farrell said. "I truly want to thank the many talented staff that worked with me and invested their time and effort behind the scenes to make The Big West successful over my 40 years with the conference."

Long Beach State held off Hawai'i in second place, while Cal Poly took third place as the three programs each finished with over 130 average points, the first time three programs have reached that threshold.
